I like a swingout at the same time as I hate it.

It's nice to store shit on, allows you to carry a bigger spare or a second spare, but gets in the way of using your truck like a truck. Say goodbye to hauling big long stuff, can't drive around with the tailgate down now.

Basically can't back into a parking space if you might need into your bed because you need 3-6 feet of clearance to open your swingout.

I am hoping to avoid some of that by changing my mind before getting bumpers. I am thinking the same set up though, single swing with jerry cans and table. I just can't make up my mind on high clearance or high clearance with trimming. If I go with trimmed, I may seriously look into @HolyHandGrenade's old bed. Most of the work will be done. I just don't know that I want to trim my front fenders to match. I'm nowhere near ready for 35's though. An awning has value for a number of occasions. The rooms are what I think I wouldn't want, but if I were to make the jump to RTT, an annex would be nice for changing in weather though.

^^^^This is the feedback I am looking for!!! I have a kayak that I haul with a tailgate extender. How hard is it to take the swingout on and off if not needed? Is that even an option? Maybe a quick release option? I know it would be heavy with a spare mounted, but it would be the best of both I would think.

:thumbsup:Hobies look awesome, but too rich for my friends and I. What does the pro angler run compared to the $1500 for the old town predator?

The pelfreybilt I had used dual roller bearings w/ a castle nut to hold it all together. Taking it off would have been a pretty significant affair. I don't know how other people are building them.

My swingout on the CBI comes off easily.
I’ll be removing it this week for repair before it self-removes from the bumper.

    Broken welds. :(

Swing outs and caps are for people who don't want to use their pickup truck like it's intended.

RE: camping, my wife and I are spending our 20th this coming May doing some of this https://advrider.com/f/threads/next-in-the-bdr-series-mabdr.1257324/ and some of this https://advrider.com/f/threads/smokey-mountain-500.926507/ both of which I've done on the motorcycle. We have some experience camping but not a lot, so this will be a learning experience for both of us. It's time for us to slow down a bit and see some of the sites that I've blasted past on the bike.

Any advice on what I absolutely need to bring is welcome.

I cannot disagree with your assessment. The swingout looks neat but it always seemed to be in the way.

I was tossing around the idea of making my own tailgate with the spare attached. It was just for the look. I gave up on that.

Backrack FTW. Longest I've gone so far was 2x8x16. Or that time I had to pick up the staircase for the house. Stairs weren't 16 feet long though

That’s 100% true. You need a roof rack or trailer to do truck bed things..
