great to hear, and I'm sure that's why Tony is motivating. kinda glad i waited on my custom knob idea, because this is turning out to be way more than that possibly.

@St.Germain @7r41lbr34k3r This is the stick used by Core-Shifters: https://core-shifters.com/products/...-1968-1979-corvette-bw-t10-muncie-m20-m21-m22

Weldability wise, I bet its just a mild steel stick with chrome plating. TIG weld it with 70S-2 or 70S-6 would be fine IMHO. You could use an 80ksi wire with 1% nickle if you are worried - the nickel adds toughness and helps a little with dissimilar metals.

If you are are really worried about what the material is 309 or 312 stainless would be the magic pill - both of these alloys have higher nickel and chrome content than standard 308 stainless wires because they are intended to join stainless to mild-steels. Here is a good explanation of 312 for use on chrome-vanadium tools and such from Lincoln Electric:

According to Hurst's website the sticks are "steel" with chrome plating. The alloy of steel is relevant to know if its weldable. I'll email Hurst to see if they will disclose that information because I am very curious on this now. The more I think about this I would go with 312 stainless to be safe, but knowing the alloy would be even better.

The case hardening pretty much kills the chop and weld idea, unfortunately.

    thanks very much for contributing.
no problem, just good to get clarity.
at this point i'm liking the idea of a brand new arm from scratch... not that there's a choice about it. the next considerations are whether this is the only good unit for this project, and when it would be available again.

Hurst hasn't replied to my FB message (no email anywhere on their website) to see the actual steel used. If its forged mild-steel with just a case hardening it could still be welded. Grinding and beveling would allow you to weld the non-hardened metal.

A lot of variables... so a new shift stick from scratch might be just as easy.

Yes, the HKey is just the regular key. I am wondering if it is possible to not take my key out of pocket to start the truck. Not looking for remote start.

Hey man, just came over from the Ov tuned thread. Ignore the quote, but what shifter system did you end up going with and do you have any regrets ?

no regrets, i have the URD with a heavy custom knob, 660g, on a 75mm extension. with a longer throw from the extension, much of the effect is negated, but in my case still shorter than stock. it's not like a sport car short shifter.

the Core thing went kinda funny and didn't work out although i tried. there may be a solution coming at some point using their shifter unit mated to a custom arm. Core is o/s for at least two months now, so nobody's in a rush, but there's been some discussion. i would love to upgrade the whole unit one day, but I'm pretty happy with the URD and fully enjoy using it, much more than stock before it.

Awesome. That sounds exactly like a setup that I would enjoy. Do you have any pictures and/or links to the shift knob and extension you went with?

I have had all manual transmission vehicles except my 96 supercharged mid-engine rear wheel drive toyota previa mini van I loved everything about that van except the automatic transmission, 2wd, and working on it did the head gasket have to drop the engine and transmission uggh fun for camping and road trips ripped the seats out and layed carpet out in it but i love my tacoma manual!

With the accelerated mid cycle refresh of the tacoma and what is shaping up to be a short 3rd generation, is anyone else afraid that the M/T will be gone too soon in the Tacoma?

I keep hearing about a new platform and I fear the manual will be no more....

I don't think they'll kill it, it's one of their major advantages over the other OEMs........that said, it might be killed with the 4th Gen some day since that's likely to be on Toyota's new Global Platform, but my hope is that it goes the other way and the 4th Gen Tacoma and 6th Gen 4Runner share a platform and BOTH get the MT

I'd love a T4R with the stick that's in my Tacoma....literally the only thing I'd sell my truck for

    Time will tell
