Listening to the radio out of Susanville KJDX just now, reading a story about a Judge denying changing endangered status of wolves in the state, Farm Bureau arguing they shouldn't be listed since there are so few here. Announcer saying wolves are as far south as Lake Tahoe, first I heard they were that far south. Previously have read they were only down to the Indian Valley by Taylorsville, a few years back they had been by the Feather River a little north of me. Wolves have "taken" a few head of cattle in Lassen County. Don't see how wolves can survive here due to no large herds of deer or elk yet. Would be neat to hear a wolf howl since I backpack and camp quite a bit, but feel for ranchers since I come from a farming background.
Per a search, seen by Boreal Mountain by I-80.

When I lived in Tahoe you would hear stories about wolf packs sending a female in heat into neighborhoods and attracting peoples dogs out into the forest where the dog(s) would never be seen again. So, yes.

There is no known pack down in the Tahoe are, only up in Lassen County and then it is still one documented pack. Coyotes will lure dogs away, but then don't think they use females to lure dogs away from home, they are more interested in reproduction.

Not trying to argue with you but I’m pretty sure is wasn’t wolves. A known pack of wolves in Tahoe would have been big news. May have been coyotes but they usually just kill dogs on the spot.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Can't wait till they start planting Grizzlies and slap them on the endangered species list too.

That would be great for the already depleated deer / elk herds.

Years ago, I think there was a article in "Backpacker" magazine about maybe planting grizzlies in the Ishi Wilderness above Chico. To me, elevation would be too low, lots of deer winter there.

Grizzly bears do not negatively affect ungulate populations. They are known to feed on young calves and fawns in the early spring but besides that they can't catch an adult ungulate.

My dad witnessed a pack of coyotes send in a coyote that was acting like it had a broken leg. A pregnant lady had two dogs that bolted to the coyote. As the dogs got close the coyote would run away and act hurt. My dad then saw a pack of coyotes slowly closing in. My dad ran into the center of the pack and literally yelled and made noises till they left. He said at 1st they were not scared but he was able to scare them off. He felt they where about to attack the entire time.

I use to make $20 per Coyote carcass when I was in high school. The local sheep farmers would pay us to hang out in their pastures at night and shoot the coyotes as they came through. I'm hearing people are getting $125-$150 per hide now.

Coyotes are smart, we have a ton of them out here in SoCal near the San Gabriel mountains. They venture into our neighborhoods all the time since we live in the foothills. Black bears and the occasional cougar too.

I swear I've seen more than one coyote using the crosswalk late at night. They actually wait at the corner until it's time to cross and then proceed lol. Seen it more than once.

Although I haven't seen them actually press the crosswalk button, that would be the icing on the cake though

Damn that's a healthy looking bear. Sadly most of ours are usually pretty thin and small, with the bad drought we've had these past several years it's taken it's toll on the wildlife. Have had a bunch of rain this winter though so hopefully things will get better for everyone, animals included.

The few I have seen are always huge like this guy. Lots and lots of deer here. So much they have become a problem with causing lots of damage to vehicles. They have talked about allowing bow hunting in the city. I just really wish they would do it. They eat all our plants, damage the grass and poop all over. They even kill people dogs sometimes. Unfortenenly that bear in the picture had two Cubs and would not go back up to the mountains so they removed them and brought them to the state boarder. At least they didnt put them down like they just did to a cougar family in another city here. Think 5 total they put down.

Laugh all you want but its widely agreed upon, bears do not regulate deer or elk populations.

See? Bears and deer coexisting. Almost some bumper sticker material right there
