ECU TSB Update

Good info, but we're on the struggle bus in this thread trying to get either TSB-0058-18 or TSB-0125-18 applied to MT engines. Both supposedly come with the same software. TSB-0062-18 only has AT ECU / TCU software.

Got this updated at the dealer on a 17. Haven't driven much but echoing everything said on here-doesnt necessarily have more power, but lower rpms feel better. Not a huge difference for me, but great that it feels like a manual should which is more responsive to my inputs and not a computer.

 

Ok so since I have had the update, I have driven roughly 1000 miles and don't feel any difference but have to say that my mileage has dropped significantly. On cruise control at 68mph after filling up the tank, I would get 23/24 mpg that would slowly fall to 22. This weekend after a trip doing everything I normally do, taking the same trip I take every year, sticking it on cruise control, I couldnt ever get above 19mpg. I have noticed this since making the change. Any way to go back to the way it was before?

 

Maybe the drop is due to winter fuel or colder temps?

 

I've got a Canadian 2017 Sport Oct/17 Mfg date.

Burlington Toyota did the update during my 16K service, it came up on the health check. (But I had to ask them to do the health check). I had the TSB handy in case I needed it.

Noticed 1-2 shifts don't have a "dead zone".
Little more torque under 3500 rpm.
The "throttle hang" while shifting seems a little less "fly by wire", so shifting is even smoother.
3500 rpm does not "hit so hard" so the truck does not seem to have as much of a "turbo lag" as it did before.
Throttle seems a little more responsive.

My truck was great before 8/10, only complaints was the 1-2 dead spot and the 3500 surge.
Now it's even more refined. 8.5/10

Anyone who has flashed this themselves... do I really need the Tactrix stuff? When I go to the link in the 1st post there in a Mini VCI cable that is listed as "Works" and it's only $18 as opposed to $160. That is a non-insignificant discrepancy. There must be more to this but I don't have the tenacity to read thru 128 pages in this thread for the nuggets.

Basically... what is the cheapest verified working solution for me to hook my laptop USB to the OBD port and flash the ECU?

If anyone is feeling wordy I am also interested in what the other expensive items bring to the table for them to be asking that much.

 

No one has reported a successful flash on anything but a Tactrix cable. I used a borrowed one, and with all the OVTs floating around, someone in your area is likely available to help. I flashed another persons Taco with the borrowed cable. The cost of two way shipping was paid for very quickly by the MPG bump that I had.

One person here bought one of the three shown in the box below and struggled just testing the connection for customizations. This is not worth bricking your ECU over. Note that doing this TSB flash can brick your ECU. OVT flashes differently and will not brick. The only upside is that if you do brick it, OVT can rescue it. I believe he is charging for that service now?

 

I have that $18 cable. I didn't feel confident enough in it to try to flash. It had communication issues with certain functions of Techstream.

NE near Scranton. Is this going to be one of those "Buy me a bunch of fancy beer and I'll flash your ECU" offers? Because I am all about that

 

If I went straight to OVT, does it make a difference if I flash the TSB first? I see he has different files for before/after but if it's irrelevant to the performance of the final product and I'm leaning that way anyway... does it matter? His kit comes with the stuff to flash it too.

I really just wanted to try the TSB before I spent OV money because I'm cheap and if it's good enough then I have $700 I can use on ski passes

 

Oof! I do not believe it matters, but I, personally, feel that the TSB tune is a better baseline? OVT needs to know what tune you are on to get you the proper files though. The exception here are the 04B10 folks, which you are not, need to get the TSB tune. Freaking @gingers.

There are two kits that you can buy. The more expensive one comes with the Tactrix cable. You just need a Windows 7 or 10 computer.

 

So, the expensive OV kit comes with the same Tactrix cable I need anyway - then if I buy it myself I can get the cheaper OV kit later and use my own cable to apply it, offsetting the cost a bit? Is that correct?

 

Exactly correct. I had thoughts of doing that myself, but the 7k redline and all the coming MT specific tweaks for 1.05 tossed me over the edge.

It's about what is stated in the TSBs:

-- 58 covers the 2017 04B12 and 2018 04A70 MT ECUs in the Table on Page 3 even though the header on Page 1 says AT only
-- 125 says that it covers the 2017 04B12 MT ECUs in the Table on Page 3 and lists ATs and MTs in that table

The fact is that both TSBs come with these software files:

-- T-0033-18.cuw for 2016 and 2017 Tacos with ECU IDs of 04B10, 04B11, and 04B12. Applying the update will give you 04B13
-- T-0037-18.cuw for 2018 Tacos with an ECU ID of 04A70. Applying the update will give you 04A71

So, taking both TSBs with you to the dealer and walking through the application to MTs is the best route to getting it applied if they don't believe you at first.

It shouldn't be this hard to get this much needed update, but it is what it is and was a stark difference for me.


ETA: FWIW, at the time that I did my update at home, only 58 existed. I updated my Taco and another person's 2018.

 

Yes, my 18 was the same, after 2 to 3k miles it loosened up nicely, wish reverse was bottom right...
