Looking at a new 2019 Tacoma - Have some questions!

This is the only logical answer. Most if not all new cars going forward will have some form of TSS.

Also, wait for the 2020 and disable TSS (not recommended. however, you won't realize it until something happens wishing you had it).

 

Personally, I think the thing that really SHOULD be the case instead of relying on a computer for that is simply to "pay attention" - they put all that junk in because of all the people that drive while texting, not pay attention, etc.
I personally wouldn't want that feature... But I'll live with it, so long as I can relocate the sensor and get a nice grille in the truck.

 

Yep, no manual in the config you’re looking for. ECT always on mod may make you happy with transimission. OVTune may make you even happier.

I agree with others.... wait to see what 2020 reveals and then make the call.

 

I bought mine about 3 weeks ago (got about 3K miles on it now)...2019 TRD Off Road 4x4 short Bed/Double Cab with Convenience Pkg...I researched a lot and drove a lot of trucks - I genuinely enjoy this truck. I drive a LOT - about 150 miles a day, up and down hills and in small towns. We OWN a small horse farm ON A RIVER in the hills of TN - so I ACTUALLY use the 4WD system often and I do a lot of 60-70 MPH travel as well as drive through small towns with 25 MPH limits. I have zero issues with the transmission. I've read all the complaints - and not discounting them but perhaps I'm not as conscious, not as heavy footed or simply have different expectations. We have an (older) Chevy Tahoe,(new) GMC High Top Conversion van (same basic engine as the Tahoe but loaded with Big TV, leather captains chairs, etc), a GMC Acadia and this truck. In the past several years - I've had BMW 7 Series, Corvette, Prius and a few others. The Tacoma drives different than each - but honestly I don't have any issues passing or it holding speeds up and down mountains - I don't notice gear hunting, pauses, etc. I think the adaptive cruise works well - up and down hills too. You may have guessed - I'm older - so as far as Apple Car Play(I have iPhones)or Android Auto radio - I'm too ignorant to know what I'm missing perhaps. It hooks up well to my phone (on the charger provider) and charges it through my Lifeproof case - I get my calls over the speaker fine, hear well and the voice recognition to call my business partners/family is totally sufficient. I hope this is helpful - as for your other questions I'm not your guy - I actually like the chrome grill as well as the other stock things on the truck. I wish you well in your search and possible purchase...just don't spend too much - buy land...like Will Rogers said: "...they aint making anymore of it..."

Same boat here. Almost signed the papers for a 2018 OR last Dec but then walked out as I felt some aspects were underwhelming for a $35k vehicle. Waited out the new Ranger and just test drove it last weekend and it's really really nice but of course, 1st year prod so no gauge of long term reliability yet.

Back to the Taco and then heard the 2020 mid year changes and super hyped now. I'm gonna wait out end of this year to get mine ...if 2020 Taco introduces a 8-speed tranny and some minor uplifts, I'll be all over it (vs tha Ranger which is my close 2nd right now). Ranger is more $$$ than the Taco being a new release and I can barely get any dealers to even knock off $850 past msrp and someone is buying these as my local Ford got 3 last week and all are gone within a week.

 

Would an 8-speed transmission be really good for longevity though? if it's something new like that, sounds like it "could" be sketchy... sometimes new stuff like that = many problems... just thinking out loud.

 

Well..between Ford and Toyota, I'd rather take my chances with the latter ;-).

 

haha nice! mine is exactly the opposite, from growing up in a shop, Ford's have always been among the best trucks... (but I hate rangers, I speak of the full size of course) but situation makes me interested specifically in the Tacoma for other reasons. Price being a factor.

 

OVtune is a must have with these 3rd gens......makes the driveability so much better!

No apple or android play but rumored to be on next years model. Mine works fine for plugging in to the USB port or blue tooth when I’m lazy. The voice commands currently do everything else I need it to do. Aftermarket stereos are available too obviously. You can find one that does everything you want I to

I drive an Auto, and its great. I transition between early morning highway driving to mountain roads to off-road to 5mph in traffic. No issues. Mine is a 2018

I would do more research in to how to get 35s on these trucks. Is a lot of work, chopping, regearing, modifying angles... for what, an extra inch of clearance. Stick with 33s. The trucks look like they are supposed to look with 33s

I keep my Tacoma completely stock so can't answer any of your questions except for the transmission and I have absolutely no qualms with that. Folks typically are never satisfied and like to harp on one thing or another, I just wish I could address more of your concerns. Reliability, value, resale, and rugged long term construction are my only concerns. Toyota provides that in spades. Good luck.

 

You are going to hate the transmission period. Now there is an aftermarket ECU flash that is like 700.00 that is supposed to be amazing.

Lastly are you going to off-road? if so the long bed hitch will get caught up on things that the short bed wont. (You can find videos on you tube about this)

 

no real intention of serious off road, minor trails, and things getting into places for duck hunting, nothing serious at all.

would the ECU flash harm the warranty?
I drive very modest, I never like revving the hell out of my engines, and such... so I am hoping transmission can just shift "normal" not cause excessive revs and stuff like that.

 

I could probably be ok with 33's, I just like the looks of 35's a lot more. if it needs to be re-geared and such, then yea I'd probably make the sacrifice to just stick with 33's .

Yea, I dont have to have Billet, just something other than stock. I'm very very big on customized looks and I like to remove all factory emblems, juts looks real clean like that. and some kind of custom grille with a light bar would be preferable. I'm glad to hear I can relocate the tss stuff... that was really the bulk of my question, that that could even be an option.

 

Test drive the new Tacoma. See if you can do a more thorough drive, i.e. up hills, on the highway a bit, etc. I'm going to guess that if the dealer finds a different tune than theirs, it could affect warranty. OV Tune is removable.
I loved everything about the new Tacoma except for the powertrain. Personal preference. If I had bought the manual version I would've kept it.

 

ahh nice! if OV Tune is removable, then that's a perfect option, if I ever needed warranty to replace engine or something, I could just remove tune before it going in!

 

An aftermarket ecu tune that makes the truck way better. Better, smoother shifting in addition to a little extra power. Makes the truck run a lot smoother. Granted, I don't know what the new Tacoma's shifting is like, but my 2017 was greatly improved by the tune. It is said to be undetectable by the dealership.

 

These guys all gave great advice and I am picking up my 2019 this week. I also have the long bed but I went TRD Off Road, mainly for the rear locker.
Tranny isn't going to be an issue too many modes to drive in and there is a Tune you can purchase to get better service and shifting. (OV Tacoma Tune) plenty of threads on that too.
Also look at OEM Audio but that won't get you Apple Play so something that is important might be worth waiting for
Lifts done right are not an issue, I haven't heard of 35's being run without cutting so do the research. I'm new here but I've extracted a ton of info over the last 2 months and there are some really technical people on this forum. I only joined a few days ago. Look around there isn't too much you won't find here. And plenty you never thought of too.

Good luck whatever you decide after reading this I might should have waited for 2020 model. LOL!
