I think they changed the camera/harness when Toyota moved the display from the mirror to the head unit.

@clupi I'd like to *add* the camera to my '08 and I'm purchasing a Sony XAV-AX100 aftermarket head unit. How'd it work out for you?

@HAVOC I'm interested in buying this, provided I can figure out if my 08 crew-cab has the onboard wiring for it and that it will work for my aftermarket head unit.

Thanks in advance for any jedi tacoma input.

It's actually pretty easy! I don't remember the colors but 2 wires are positive and negative ( camera is about 5-6V but it will handle 12v) and the other two you cut an rca jack and splice it in. There are writeups on here if you search it. You just meed a little know how yo do car audio... you habe to run some cables up fromt feom yhe camera but if you want it professional and to disconnect your tailgate its good to get the plug from the chassis

This is a crazy deal for anyone that wants it! I paid about $120 for my camera used

According to my info, Toyota put the rear camera in 2009 and up so it looks like you'll have to run your own wiring. You would also see if you can even bolt the camera in your tailgate handle or buy one from a newer truck.

You do need to change your handle with either a factory 09+ or an aftermarket pop&lock which has the room for a cam!.. yhats what i did. And like you were saying you do need to run the wires up

Thanks @HAVOC and @clupi —that’s exactly the info I needed to make the decision about what option to go with.
