Magnet Fishing finds and BS

anyone out there gone magnet fishing? looking for another hobby to add to my million other ones. Those of you that go what strength magnet do you use? I was looking at getting a 900lb-1200lb to go play around with. I've seen a lot of videos of people pulling up some good shit from the water ways. lets see what you all have found.

 

I just learned something new today, and I'm highly interested (as a small boat owner and metal detecting newb)

 

I saw it as something that’s free (aside from the magnet) you’ll clean some trash from the waterways (since most items you find are garbage) and possibly come across something cool once in a while.

I’m looking at getting this one.

 

Sounds interesting... I actually have found stuff like cell phones, iPods and tons of random lures while spearfishing

 

So I stumbled across this thread last week, first time I had heard of magnet fishing. I started watching some YouTube videos, and then ordered a magnet. I just got a 330 lbs one to start with. A buddy at work saw some of the videos I was watching and ordered an 800 pounder. Hopefully we can get out and give it a shot soon.

 

I never knew it was a sport. But Ive thought of it, I got a good magnet. Just got to go try it out...Prob wont find much of value except some pliers or a pocket knife where I go...LOL

Actually this is a fun idea I may give a go in my kayak. Problem is, not sure what is ferrous that would be valuable in most cases. Except ditched handguns.

 

pocket knives Id be leary on guns, unless you have a cop friend that can run the numbers...Some places could be old swords or something like that depends on the history.

 

I have thought about it... Im a big nerd when it comes to metal detecting. 99% of the stuff you find is junk but if you spend enough time at it your bound to find something cool sooner or later

 

I do actually have an excellent resource. Guy who once worked for me is now CIO of the largest LEO group around here.

But the value may come from discreet resale of the unregistered units, right?

Cool! I like old bottles I dont have much of a collection anymore. I had about a dozen or so at one time,
I found a pistol like the one in the bottom but it didnt have the cylinder, but I didnt have a metal detector and found it digging for some old bottles. I did end up losing it after a few moves around the country.

 

I know a couple friends that are in LE. so IF I ever did find one I know who I'd talk to. I prob would find a lot of fishing lures here. Im going to try it this spring

 

My challenge is salt water. Not a lot of metal holds up well.

 

gold does but obviously not ferrous...you'd be better off with scuba gear and underwater metal detector..

 

Just ordered a 330 lb on Amazon. Going to try it out at the 13,000 acre lake we fish (it was not actually a lake until 1972 when it was flooded for a nuclear power plant).

To tell the truth, that's why I ordered the smaller magnet. I don't want to sink my little boat trying to pull something up that won't budge LOL
