[Preventing] access to the Event Data Recorder?

Like [I assume] a lot of people, I'm not particularly pleased about the fact that these trucks have an EDR installed, but... nothing I can do about that. What I am hoping that I can do do something about is preventing access to it without my permission. I know some vehicles connect through the OBD II data port, and others have a separate port, usually tucked up under the dash somewhere...

Does anyone KNOW what the case is with the 2018s? If it's the OBD port, that's easy to secure, if it's something else, where and what does it look like?

What I don't like is the ability of people to potentially access the information. Not saying it's reasonable, or rational... just my think. For instance, if I was involved in an accident, my EDR data could potentially be accessed by police without my permission. This could potentially be detrimental to me....

 

Buy a quality scanner and delete recorded data .

So is there a market for “clean” EDRs now? Kind of like clean piss for drug tests?

 

I live in BC; the laws surrounding these are still rather murky at the moment. My intent is NOT to disable the electronics (out of concern for what that would do to the truck as a whole), but rather to secure the port if possible. For instance if it's just a random port coming out of a wiring harness tucked up under the dash, fab up a little aluminum box and lock it shut, if it's the OBD port, than insert a dummy plug and secure that with a lock and strap. Not fool-proof, simply an idea that I hope I will never need to prevent access without my express permission and presence.

 

In CA, at least, law enforcement needs to get a search warrant to access the information.

 

Seems excessive, if you were doing something illegal or not doing something you’re supposed to be doing and it caused you to have an accident they should be able to fry your ass using whatever evidence they can legally obtain. Trying to obstruct that will only make things worse for you.

I smell something potentially illegal happening here. The only reason to want that data deleted is in the event you were doing 80 in a school zone when you plowed into that bus full of war veteran nuns.

 

I don't have a problem with it. In fact I have a front and rear dash cam installed in case of an accident. I don't drive like an ass and I follow all the laws, so if I am in an accident i want them to pull all the data they need. The most I ever go over the speed limit is 5 over, and that is not going to be enough to hang someone, because the speedometer is not 100 percent accurate anyway. I even have a front and rear camera with GPS installed on my motorcycle. Just the other day I was on my bike and a cop pulled out of a gas station and got behind me. I know he was waiting for me to do something stupid, but I kept it no more than 5 over the limit and he followed me for just over 3 miles and then got bored, so he switched lanes and went around me. I waved at him as he went by and he just kept going.

 

If LE really wants the data in a criminal prosecution, they can send the modules to the appropriate company and get the data out of them.

 

I have GPS on my Taco dashcam too, figure it will either help out if someone fakes an accident or if theres ever a “no fault” decision I can fight in court with it.

 

I worked a fatal wreck some years back and a few days later we were called to the garage to help a Trooper with his investigation. We had to use our cutters & spreaders (Jaws of life) to dismantle a big section of the car under and to the side of the passenger seat to get to a black box. I had never knew of a box that well hidden and hard to access until then. This was an older sports car and the Trooper hooked it up to his computer and gathered all kinds of info, he knew how much gas was being given at the time of the crash and the guy didn’t apply any brakes before impact. I wonder where our black boxes are hid in our Tacos?

 

I can understand the concern, we all should be more aware of how our DATA is used. That being said, if the LE wants the information they are going to get it.

 

There isn't a black box specifically for recording, it's the SRS central airbag module, it just so happens to record very specific data, that can only be retrieved by investigation services.

 

Or you could take responsibility for your actions if that ends up being the case. You know, like a normal human
