Mine was a joke, but bringing the Taco back in line with the Runner, might not be a bad move.

 

Eh idk...i would prefer them to be different and set them apart a bit...everything seems to be similiar now adays with front ends of cars in general.

 

I think we all agree that the body of the 3rd gen is satisfactory. If they want to make a significant market cornering change they should put the 300 hp (Camry) version of the 3.5 in the Tacoma and hire some Ford (or other make) engineers to design a good timely shifting automatic transmission. I would give up 2-3 mpg to get a powerful engine. They should channel that Atkinson cycle over to European markets where fuel is $7 a gallon. At current USA gas prices I would trade mine in a second for one without the granny Atkinson. Give me some hp and torque at 2500 rpm's where I can use it. We should not need to spend $800 for a tune to make our trucks legit.

 

I was told they were going the other way and the next 4Runner will look more like the Tacoma. Obviously pure speculation but he did at least work for Toyota

 

I hear ya on that..but if they were to sacrifice 2 to 3 mpg I'd be happy with the updated 4.0 in the 4runner.

I don't really think it's the engine though as much as it's the trans

Driveability is what matters to me not top end power that I'd never see in a truck.

 

Hope they're planning on putting the new 4runner on a diet. If the 3.5 is indeed going in it, gonna be working pretty hard considering the tacoma weighs less.

 

Nope, I kind of like it. I know, weird. But I love all the new agressive huge lexus fronts too.

 

I was referring to the looks but the 3.5 sure doesn’t seem like a good fit for the 4Runner. I would imagine they would go to a hybrid offering before that.

 

I somewhat agree. Shifting in Sport mode does improve performance so there is some power there. Regarding the 4runner I just wish they would update the interior to 3rd gen Taco standards. My 2nd gen Taco was a great truck with the 4.0 but mine was terrible on gas. Maybe the 5 speed transmission was the culprit. There must be a middle ground between the 2 engines and transmissions. I would be shocked if the 4th gen Taco continues with the 3rd gen powertrain in its current configuration.

 

If Nissan can squeeze 300BHP out of a 2.0L 3 cyl, I'd think toyota could bring us a new 6 cyl engine with more power than current and still have the same reliability with better fuel economy.

 

Depends on Toyota . I've been watching the new Ranger and the 2019 (even though announced last summer) is ONLY making an appearance now on the Stealerships and again in limited trims and options (and they are selling this overnight ..lol).

The 2019 Tacos were at my local dealer by Dec end (almost purchased a leftover 2018 back then and good thing I waited it out). But being a mid term model change, who knows. But I'm expecting early Dec and I've love to be proven wrong.

That just means I can enjoy my X5 a little bit more till then.
