So is 50$ the new norm for the Volvo tube? That’s all I’ve been able to turn up

I got mine for $30, there are still some others below $40, like this one

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-VOLVO-S60-MASS-AIR-FLOW-METER-9202199-641988-336-60587/264105830580

My initial plan was to save money and get one from a junkyard. Two junkyards later, all 22 Volvos I found were turbos, so no dice. Plus I got to walk knee deep in standing water due to all the rains we had, so that was a total waste of three hours (at least I didn't catch a cold). $30 seemed like a very good price by comparison!

I did a quick search on eBay and saw some at 35.00. 45.00 free shipping.

Just make sure it’s the same style that’s just like the Toyota MAF,

    VOLVO made a few styles

So I accidentally bought an early style air box that won’t work with either my trucks because the maf is the newer version.

Pairing the old box with the Volvo tube make it work right?

That’s my understanding but I just wanna make sure.

I’m kind of confused about why you’re getting the tube portion?

Also, these old air boxes have a tendency to crack right where the maf bolt support attaches to the rear of the box and couldn’t obtain a used one that wasn’t cracked at any wrecking yard in the country on car-part. So, I picked up a 99+ style airbox that has the maf tube attached for $40 new, and its the correct size and everything.

I found that my intake duct was very stiff and splitting, but as it aged and stiffened, it shrank and is what caused the airbox to crack. I got one of the $20 intake ducts (downstream of the maf) on Amazon and everything went right on no issues, no codes.

I’ll try and find a link to the airbox that I bought, but autozone sells them too.

I mean the rubber connector I had to get one that was an inch longer because it wasn't connecting the two sections together

I'd be interested in seeing the link for the 3.4L - I was only able to find them for the 4 cyl 4Runners. And all the ones I saw at the junkyards were damaged. So for me, it made sense to keep my perfectly intact '97 airbox and tube, and just replace the '97 MAF tube with the Volvo tube and the '99 Denso MAF sensor.

Ah derp, well I feel silly for not thinking about the fact that it’d work fine with a functional airbox; that not everyone’s would be broken.

It looks like I paid $72 for the 99 style box: (I think autozone quoted me less)
Air Cleaner Filter Box Replacement for Toyota Pickup Truck 1770007060 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNKCG4X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TOLwCbW85WSA7

    $26 for the intake hose:
Dade Air Intake Tube Cleaner Hose for Toyota Tacoma 4Runner 3.4L-V6 1788162130 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0788H95XX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_NPLwCbBZ4YT71

And $20 for the maf on eBay that works perfect:
    https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/113111461874

My truck is a 97, but it was made 12/96 so I was sketched out that I might throw that lean code people report. Fortunately, there haven’t been any issues though! Good luck with your conversion!

Ugh, I feel silly for forgetting that this is the Tacoma subforum :). So that box should work for the Tacoma, but I don't think it'd work on a 4Runner? Anyway, I'm planning to keep my airbox and just swap in the Volvo duct.

So I've been in contact with several of these Ebay sellers selling the <$20 "Denso" MAFs. The ones that reply are very cagey about whether they are really Denso, and a couple said straight out that they are not, despite the Denso writing and the promise of "Genuine Denso product" in the description. I'm really beginning to doubt that you can get a genuine Denso sensor for $20 when all the online Toyota sources sell them for 3-5 times more. Maybe they will work just fine, they seem to have good feedback. But if you look carefully at the feedback, there are a number saying that these are fake. Does anyone know how to definitively determine if a MAF sensor is genuine Denso or fake, other than if it throws a code? I guess for $20 I can take that chance and see :).

I finally upgraded the '97 MAF to the '99, using the Volvo air duct.

Here is a side by side comparison of the two ducts, '99 on top and '97 on bottom:

Here's the end view, '99 on the left, '97 on the right:

The Volvo duct fit perfectly into the air ducting.

    Before:

    After:

4Runner wiring is a bit different from Tacomas, so anyone doing this for a 4Runner, here is the original wire configuration:

    Pull out the white retainer:

Release the left four pins (White stays in place):

    And rearrange like this:

Seems to run just fine, I checked the fuel trim, and the LTFT seemed a little high at idle (~14%), so I'll keep an eye on that.
