I like the price of the Carista module. I may go that route - however I don’t like that I need an additional cable and that I’ll have to mount it somewhere. We’ll see.

Does the other, less expensive module you have need to be unplugged when the truck is off? What’s the significance of the ELM327 chip?

    Excellent points regarding wifi

I am sorry, but I don't understand the additional cable? The adapter should be self powered by the OBD port.

I have left mine plugged in for extended times with no trouble. I don't know its power draw though. The ELM327 chip was the key module to look for back in the day. Again, mine is 5yrs old.

When I looked at the Carista dongle it looked like I needed a cable - so never mind. It obviously doesn’t need it...

Can fusion log knock count? Also can you use it to check transmission fluid levels by monitoring temp?

I just bought Torque Pro because that's the only one I'd heard of. I set it up for a Prius but don't have a clue how to set up for a Tacoma. The only Toyota's listed for builtin PIDs in Torque Pro is for a Prius. Now I see there's more to choose from. Fusion looks promising. How did you get the Toyota PIDs? Are they part of Fusion or a separate download. Thanks for any info you care to provide.

I've been using veepeak. Cheap and works.

I'll keep that in mind in case Torque Pro ends up not being what I want.

Torque Pro is great for monitoring general (generic) data for the Tacoma, such as temperatures, RPM, A/F ratio. But if you want to monitor Tacoma specific PIDs then OBD Fusion is way to go with the $10 add on pack. I have both apps on Android, currently using OBD Fusion to monitor misfire count and gear selection.

It's called Status of the Shift Status. Stupid name, but it shows your current gear.

I have the 2016 Toyota pack and on mine it’s “status of the shift status/ low or hi”

I didn’t like lock up status being 0 and 1 so I made them the rings around the gear number and 4WD

    thank you for the help,

@LDS 77 I really like your set up, I tried the lockup reading myself and hated it, the rings are definitely better

FIRST OFF I am not connected in any way to this guy but found a great place to learn about the Fusion and Torque Apps and how to use it for all it can do including the advanced diagnostics . You all may all already know this stuff but it helped me a lot .
On youtube there is a series of vids by OBD4Everyone . there are 18 or more videos and are very informative .
He has vids on Torque/Torque Pro and Fusion ios and android .
Just search for OBD4Everyone on you tube . The Fusion vids start at about #6 .
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2a_TbathQU is #6

FYI I just bought an OBDLink MX+ because my old Veepeak mini couldn't reset the service reminder on my motorcycle (BMW). Something to do with the Veepeak only communicating at a maximum of 8 byte segments, probably because it's got a few years on it and was a dirt cheep bottom end model to begin with. I figure some people here might experience similar issues with cheap and/or old readers and would like to know the culprit.

Just did a headache causing research on this same goal . I may be wrong but think the problem you will run into is the maps unless you are willing to have a phone contract on the tablet .
I went and ordered an Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet for the Fusion and a DMM + large tablet mount + phone mount . I will be able to install the google store to use my already purchased Fusion app + Toyota pids , and also use Amazon prime for content up to 400 gb ?, via micro sd .I only plan to use free hotspot wifi (wlan) . I will use the Truck Nav or my phone for maps so I only want 1 phone contract . I simply will not carry an 8" tablet around with me for a phone .
I felt the Amazon Fire HD 8 was the best choice at sub $75 was a great choice now that it can be hacked to use the full Google android since I already pay for prime anyway .
I also already have a case for the Fire HD tablet I ordered and held it up to the dash where it will mount . I was worried that it would be too big and block my driving view but it will be perfect for me and not block anything .

I have the Carista connector and run it with the Fusion app. No problems here, just have to buy the Toyota package through the Fusion app to get everything.
