Rhino "recovery" strap vs ARB

This is the primary difference in straps. That is how you use a snatch or kinetic strap, by leaving the strap slack and accelerating.

With a tow or static strap (anything not dynamic) you creep forward slow until you tension the strap and then start really pulling.

You can only safely store energy via a "yank" if the strap is designed for it. It's about how fast the energy goes into the strap and is released. If the strap isn't expected to stretch the energy goes out as fast as it goes it, which is how you shock and break hardware.

The term in physics is called the step response. Hit something with a hard impulse and you get a fast rise time and oscillation. Increase the time of the step and the peak is lower and the response isn't as harsh. The difference is what you're doing to the stuck truck, mu=6 in the example is yanking a tow strap (the energy the recovering truck is inputting being represented by the dashed line step function) and mu=2 or mu=1 would be the damped response with a snatch strap or Bubba rope.

 

I’m aware of what the Amazon add says. The Rhino does not store kinetic energy like the ARB, or bubba rope. That’s also why they are less than 50% the cost. This same conversation has been had over and over and over. Watch the ARB videos on YouTube for an in depth explanation. Hopefully it will better explain it for you. ARB makes snatch straps as well as tow (like the rhino) straps, tree saver etc. They are much different. The rhino, or tow straps can usually be used as a winch extension, because they don’t act like a rubberband. You do not want to use a snatch strap as a winch extension because they strech and store the energy much differently.

When you put a dynamic load on the ARB snatch strap it builds kinetic energy and uses a “rebound” effect like a rubber band to jerk the vehicle out. This is why sizing is important for the snatch strap.

Tow strap = no stretchy
Snatch strap = stretchy

 

I completely understand the difference between straps

The argument is that the Rhino is safe to use in snatch recoveries

We tried to pull my truck out slowly and do things right, but the recovery vehicle (dodge 2500 on 38” tires) started getting stuck too.

Plus, it was getting dark and I didn’t want to sleep in the snow all night... there was no time for science

 

Holy shit just buy the arb for anyone on the fence. The arb is proven time and time again, and makes an outstanding snatch strap. I’ve used mine probably 20-25 times and it works fantastically. You’re talking about saving $20, not $200. Fork over the extra cash.

 

But then we would have to find something else to argue about

Snatching with a polypropylene or polyester strap or chain is dangerous. Straps intended to be dynamic will be nylon.
