Frame rust recall

Corporate qualified my truck for a new frame today.

 

Exactly, people don't realize that an unheated garage that has no air circulation, can keep a car from drying out and when you add the humidity from storing it wet just accelerates the corrosiveness of road salts. A heated garage that dries out the air and removes moisture is a different story though.

 

I was qualified today as well! Such a relief. I haven't read through this whole thread because it is so long, but if I can offer my advice to those of you researching before you take it to a dealership for its first inspection, learn from this:

First, I took the truck in blindly without having inspected it myself. Don't do that.
Second, know what the settlement document defines as the "rust perforation standard" and also know whether you are still eligible according to the defined time period. A GM of a dealership tried to tell me that it had expired. He was wrong. ----"A 10 mm PERFORATION". That's one perforation and you qualify. You won't be approved if it's only through one layer of the two layer frame. Even if the top layer is critically delaminated. MAKE SURE THEY MEASURE IT IN THE CLAIM THEY SUBMIT TO CORPORATE ---- time period; 12 years from date of first purchase.

Third, listen to the guys on this thread and take a hammer to it. This opened up 2 holes in my frame, which would have been denied otherwise. Light tapping is all you need to find a bad spot.

I was denied because of no perforations. Persisted enough to get the field rep out after I found the holes. Very impressed with the field rep I met today. A heck of a guy. I had an answer in 40 minutes.

Do all these things before taking it in and you may avoid some of the same anxiety from the last week!

 

I just got my truck back a few weeks ago.
Took it in for an inspection (frame had about a 23mm round hole, other wise looked totally fine). Dealer sent paperwork off to Toyota. about a month later they called and said it was approved for a replacement. Brought the truck in 2 weeks later on Wednesday jan 23 first thing in the morning. They called back Friday morning and said it was ready to be picked up! FAST job! The one mechanic who does the frame replacements at this dealership said he has done about 23 so far. So he has it figured out. Labor got billed out for 41 hours.
New frame, lower control arms, leaf springs, brake lines, nuts bolts and various hardware. I did notice the new frame also had plugs in all the holes and the two sections that are laminated together had pick sealant run along the seams.
Did I mention the truck is a 2005 with rebuild status!

 

Wow, I thought it exempted trucks with a rebuilt title status? Either way, nice!

 

Its supposed to, even the mechanic said. I guess they slipped it through some how.

 

Has anyone had issues with sliders bolted/welded onto the frame? I assume this could potentially speed up the rusting process?

I don't have them but I'm wondering for those that do.

 

And if Dana had washed the frames after welding and machining operations and not contaminated the rust proof dip it wouldn’t have been a problem.

 

My truck sits in a unheated garage. I agree it keeps it damp so rust has moisture and air to grow.
But so does the wife’s suby.
The truck rusts and the suby isn’t by any means close to what the trucks underneath did.

My dealer doesn’t care if you bought it yesterday or if its salvage/rebuilt as long as it’s registered to you and qualified they will do it.

Unsure about stuff welded to the frame?
I think they will do it but it will return missing the welded on parts. They may charge to remove them for you if you choose.

Don’t trust the dealer!
Know what you have before you go.
I found my fail, when showing the tech out in the parking lot he admitted it would had probably got missed.
I’ve found holes on 3 trucks that were missed by the Toyota inspection.
Even the tundras are getting new frames here.

Pressure wash frame.
I use an all to poke and stab.
Take a lot of pictures I have a inspection scope also.
The pics can be reviewed later to zoom in on spots hard to see.
A phone can get some good pics in hard to see spots.
Take a lot of pics!
The ones of your thumb or forehead crack who knows what the hell that was of are easily deleted.

 

I had sliders and a cab mount chop done to mine and it qualified. I didn't even close the cut portion of the cab mount back up.

 

I always wondered if they would void the frame replacement if you had the cab mount chop. I feel like that gives them leverage to say you modified/cut/drilled your frame which in turn accelerated the rust. (Not saying that it does).

 

I had a similar expierence. The service manager said his techs could not find any holes so I showed him pics I took on my phone. I had a frame approved by corporate within 10 minutes and some meek looking techs lurking about. Even if you trust them don't trust them. A new frame is a big deal.

 

My 2005 just had its frame replaced last week.gotta day I was pretty pleased with the job the local Toyota did. I put all new bilstein 5100’s on and new 4Runner SR5 rims wrapped in KO2’s. Did the timing cover seal, water pump, serpentine belt, rear diff seal as well. The truck drives amazingly and was done in a week.

 

Just curious... What dealership did you go to? I had a pretty good experience too and very fast turn around.

Yeah.. Just wanted to crank them out and get paid$$$ Once the winter weather breaks up here in NE Pennsylvania, I gonna give the 17 Tacoma a good wash, wax and frame cleaning.

 

Finally got the call that they are pulling my truck into the garage for the swap today. It's been there at the dealer since the first week of December.

Man I miss my truck! Since then I've been in a Corolla for a month, a rav4 for a few days, and a third gen for a minute. My least fave for general driving has been the third gen truck actually but at least it's a truck.

I brought them third gen uca's, front strut and coils assembled, and rear shocks. Hopefully they won't give me shit about using third gen parts for my second gen. I'm also hoping they replace the rear springs under the recent spring recall, I do qualify but hopefully they'll recognize that.

 

I had mine done last year at this time. The dealer wanted to take my Taco in November until the new frame arrived. I asked if it was unsafe to drive? They checked it and said no. So I kept driving it until the new frame arrived.

Because I had previously patched the oil pan, I had them replace it. They also recommended replacing all the power steering lines since it showed some sign of corrosion. When its all done and you're back on the road, make sure everything sounds and feels like it did before. They will be doing a lot of work on your pickup.

But yeah I get what you're saying I'll look her over good.


I'm going to wait and see what they recommend as far as extra work. I'm broke as hell right now so if it's not going to explode, I'm not trying to replace it right now.
