Mobil1 5W-30 with either an OEM or Mobil1 filter. The service manual I found in my new truck says change it every 5k miles, and CR did a study with NY taxi cabs and found that changing it every 6 or 7k makes no difference than every 3k, so I am going with every 5k.

the previous owner of my truck said he always used 20w-50 for the florida heat. I don't know if i should continue with that philosophy or not. I know in motorcycles that a very high weight oil can make the engine sluggish and put a lot of pressure on the oil pump and system. But it does get pretty hot down here, especially in the summer.

I was thinking of going down to 10w-40 but im surprised most of you guys are doing 5w-30. even in the summer?

My truck has a little over 82000 miles on it. I'm not sure what the previous owner used for oil. I'm a little leary about switching to synthetic at this point because I had engine issues on an old tercel after switching to mobil1. Am I insane?

I read the same article and it was interesting about the lack of wear reduction improvement from the use of additives like Slick 50.

I change every 5k, which ends up being about 9-10 months, and have historically used Toyota filters and a high quality 5-30 such as Castrol.

MobilOne 5w-30 extended service. You should be running synthetic in your engine. It is vastly superior to dino. There's fun discussion about this over at Bob is the Oil Guy. But I live in Alaska's interior and the oil I put in *must, must, must* be synthetic as I require it to be as fluid as possible at -35º F Below zero. Synthetic fluids work at those temperatures. Conventional oils simply don't.

(and besides, the shear factor is so much better with synthetics: they just don't break down like Dino oils do).
