Oil Leak near drivers front axle

Well, I'm a bit confused here about this oil leak that started happening recently.

The oil is about the consistency and color of motor oil or gear oil, but it looks like its coming from the drivers inner cv boot on the largest lip. I felt around the boot where it seemed like the oil is coming from and didn't see or feel any cracks or tears. There's a good splatter of oil right around the mounts/brackets like oil was being slung from the cv boot. It really seems way too thin to be grease though.

Any ideas?

I sprayed it down with cleaner tonight, but will take pics of it the best I can tomorrow if it helps.

 

Well check your front diff oil level, also it could be grease oil separating. When grease gets very old it can no longer hold mixture of oil in solution so oil easily separates. next step it will start drying up.

 

I wanted to check the front diff level but the last person to put on the filler plug decided to goober up the end. If its on nearly as tight as the rear one was, there's no way I'll be able to get it off with out completely stripping it. So, I'm just going to make the dealer that put it on take it back off and put in a new plug. Silly me for thinking I can be lazy and let someone else change the gear oil would actually be less of a hassle....

I guess I'll open the boot and take a look at the grease and see what it looks like. Probably about due anyway.

 

Did you ever repacked your CVs? or they are original?

 

Pretty sure they're original, so its kinda getting to be that time anyway after 140k.
