Solution for overheating builtin Qi charger on 3rd Gen Tacoma

3rd Gen Tacoma Limited.

Ok, so I have one of the phones that causes the builtin Qi charger to overheat. I may have found a solution.

I bought a magnetic cupholder phone mount and put it into the useless rectangular bin fore of the round cupholder. Then I got a fast charge wireless charger and attached one of the metal plates to the bottom of it. I then set the wireless charger onto the magnetic mount. How do I stop it from flying around when I take a curve you ask? I took a deodynium magnet from a spent hard drive and hot glued it to the wireless mount and put a metal plate inside of my phone case. I had to make sure the plate didn't interfere with charging and held the phone in place. Success on both counts.

I still plan to hardwire power but, for now, I power it via the accessory plug in the bin under the armrest.

I was pretty bummed when I learned how useless the stock wireless charger was... it was one of the few tech gadgets I was excited about the 3rd gen having...

Yeah, me too. I have so many "upgrades" I want to do on this truck. At least I've got this one done. Well, almost.

 

I'm pretty sure it's a well known problem for the S8+ as well as others. I even tried using it without the case, which is as thin as cases get, but no joy.

 

Not to mention the phone is almost useless when it's in the builtin Qi charger. I can't tell you how many times I've had to grab the phone to do something (like start a new podcast, etc.). This makes that no longer a problem.

 

Keep an eye on the temp of your phone battery. Any time I tried magnetic mounts and wireless charging, my phones would get ridiculously hot. Unfortunately, those two things don't play nice together.

 

True. And the S8+ doesnt have a removable battery.

 

I’ve had zero issues with my Qi charger.

 

S9+ here in a Pelican case. Works just fine with the truck charger.

 

Yea I Keep getting those blinking LED's on my Qi Charger is pretty annoying

 

I use mine on my S8 Active just fine, through a fairly thick case, but I do have an occasional overheating issue on hot days.

 

I have issues with an s8+ regardless of outside temp. It only happens on long drives, maybe 1+ hours. Once it starts, it takes FOREVER to cool down enough to charge again. This is the second most stupid design issue on the truck, right after hanging the exhaust down sideways below the frame.

 

My s8+ in a case works fine with the built in qi charger.

 

Hold the phone in front of the vent. Takes like 10 seconds to cool back down and start recharging.

 

Mine doesn't. I held it out the window at 70mph in 20 degrees for a bit. The charger is still hot apparently.

 

Hmm...never heard of any battery issues with Samsung...(sarcasm)

PS...at least it hasn’t exploded yet...

 

So your solution for this problem is to stop using it?

 

I realize the thread is dead, but adding for posterity. Just picked up my 'new to me' '18 TRD Sport with the charger two months ago.

I have Samsung brand wireless fast charges in my home and never have heating problems.

In the Tacoma, have noticed overheating on S9 Note on a few occasions. Now battery is expanding inside the phone. As noted above, Samsungs no longer allow user replaceable battery so it will likely cost me $70+ to have it replaced before it cracks the case open.

Not using the Qi charge does seem to be the only solution at the moment.
