Awesome post! I hope you type faster than me cause it’d take me 2 days to type all that. Good stuff.
I say if you can afford a new vehicle and it’s in your budget then get one. I know you’ve formed an attachment to your truck, but ya gotta let go sometime. It’s just great having a new vehicle with all the new fancy bells and whistles. It just feels good. If you can keep your old one and buy a new one do that.

Wow, you put a lot of effort into that post. Thanks for sharing

Also, wow you drive a lot. 250 round trips to Oregon and back from the Bay Area? That is a lot. What kind of work do you do?

Any issues seen running the spark plugs till 90k instead of the recommended 30k? (EDIT: I see you got back on a 30k rotation after that first change)

I would keep the truck, see how many miles you can rack up on it.

I had a 95 runner many years ago... it was awesome
I recently got a 2018 rav4 AWD, but really wanted a new 4runner (opted for 4 banger to save on gas & price point)
one day I will get a runner....they look so awesome in there current styling

I do contracting work, mainly electrical work

spark plugs- no issues waiting until 90k, but I only did that because I never imagined keeping the truck this long
I thought Id trade in at 100k, but it was good as new then so I kept driving. after I decided to keep the taco long term, I started following the manufacturer spec'd spark plug change every 30k.

side note on plugs- one plug (pass side near firewall) has become very difficult to remove. the first 50% of unscrewing is a total nightmare (almost feel like I am going to snap the plug). need to use a long ratchet & really torque down to get it out. then magically it gets really loose & simple like the other 5 plugs. I put plenty of anti seize on all plugs....I have read it is normal for plus near fire wall to do this as they dont get air circulation as well as the front of motor. or I cross threaded that plug insert on one of the spark plug services

I dread the day I snap that plug...hopefully I get to 500k first

in my perfect world, Id keep the 2013 taco for rough use (winter driving, dump runs, home depot hauls) & get a new 2020 taco for long trips & new features....& maybe a 2020 supra for track days

You may not want to use anti seize. I use denso plugs in my 2nd gen. They have the silver threads, denso recommends no anti seize.

I have always heard of fear of over torquing with anti sieze. Nice to know Densos don't reccomended it either.

    This is amazing. Good work!

It is crazy to me with how much you drive and how much detail you put into taking care of the truck that you have never changed the rear brakes and it does not look like you plan to. They have to be worn out at 300k right?

Also getting 150k out of front pads and rotors is crazy to me. Especially since you live in the hills and also deal with California traffic often. Maybe im just comparing this to my Rav. Have not had the Taco very long although I had a first gen in high school.

Props to you for learning mechanics on the taco. I learned on a classic vehicle and I have done some stuff on modern vehicles but I doubt I would ever touch the transmission. Esp without a dipstick. My 68 has a dipstick for cryin out loud.

Also I think it is really cool you have a high mileage 4x4. I don't know if I have heard of one on here over 400k. Most of the crazy ones like the million mile guy are 2wd 4 bangers. I may be wrong.

What torque wrench did you buy/reccomend?

-no one believes me when I state I went 150k on original front pads & rotors, but I did
& most folk find rear brakes to 300k no big deal...strange huh?

-I am due for rear brake service....I removed the drum covers recently & am running out of pad on normal braking side...the parking brake side pad is like new still. maybe I can squeeze a little more life out of them to 325k....only 20k miles away ATM

-I dont use brakes much....lots of throttling down & downshifting to 4th/3rd gear to cut speed aka paying attention to driving conditions ahead of you to slow down instead of slamming on brakes at last second to cut speed....I also tend not to tailgate, which forces one to brake a lot more unnecessarily

-tranny is scary to touch, but thats life!....the more you do something, the more confidence you gain in your ability to do it right
I hate the fact that there is no easy way to fill/check tranny fluid level....major shortcoming on toyota engineering part

-torque wrench is a generic one (says 'powerbuilt' on it) I think I paid $50. it handles 20-200 foot pounds, great for most work on truck
I dont think the brand matters much, rather using any torque wrench to lock down connections back to factory/toyota engineering specs is most vital...you can pick one up at any autozone or home depot

thanks for your comments & reading the write up

I believe ya about the brakes, just replaced front while front end was tore apart for some upgrades at 98k an still had 1/2 pads, rotors just a small lip was all. I was happy cause she’s a heavy heffer nowadays.

AC is still very frigid...works like new as does the heater
at the 300k when I did the radiator service I decided to swap out the thermostat for shits & giggles
(nothing was wrong with the factory original but I thought better safe than sorry, being such a simple swap while doing a radiator fluid service)

That's great. At 10 years old, and 46,000 miles, my AC started to blow warm air through all 4 vents. Nothing AC Pro can't fix...
