Didn't know the 2019 Ranger was available with manual transmission.

    It isn't.

Being able to shift your transmission into neutral with the engine off has been around for over 100 years.

If the owners use the handbrake or parking brake then it should be a non issue.

If I remember correctly, Ford's record is 11 recalls in a single year on the Focus. Wonder if the Ranger will break that record?

Normally, Ford (and GM) reports sales quarterly instead of monthly, but 1200 Rangers were sold in January according to the previous article I linked, which means most of the trucks in the recall pool are still in various stages of transit.

Here's how 1200 compares to other trucks: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2019/02/best-selling-pickup-trucks-in-america-january-2019/

The next time we see Ranger sales numbers will probably be early April, for Q1 sales.

I have been thinking about your response.

I respect your posts and so will keep the smartass reply to myself.

On a serious note, the fact that a recall has been issued indicates it is a problem.

Would you still consider this a non issue if your wife, teenage child or some other loved one was driving a vehicle with this defect?

    I myself would be concerned.

Here is verbiage from the NHTSA's website:

NHTSA issues vehicle safety standards and requires manufacturers to recall vehicles and equipment's that have safety-related defects.

It's a safety issue, to be sure.

I agree that MT driver's are cognizant of putting the truck in gear with the parking brake engaged when parking.

People driving AT expect the car to stay in park once they turn off the ignition and take their foot off the brake.

I hope you didn't take my post the wrong way, maybe because I have only owned manual vehicles I expect the driver to use the handbrake. Looks like the recall was saying that the interlock could possibly not engage and it could physically be shifted out of Park. I was noticing newer vehicles don't have the shifter go straight back but are gated to the left or right for each gear, I guess that is for extra safety too.

You folks know the NA Ranger does have a completely different powertrain than the global truck right? This isn’t surprising, I mean a late 2018 launch for this truck was a rush. They will have a few issues. At least the mechanical components themselves are fairly well tested on other models.

Yes, automatic transmissions are an oddity outside of North America

Always interesting to see a rear-engined bus with manual transmission. Imagine the length of the shift linkages.

It's just a design choice - either use a straight gate with a button-latched shift knob, or a patterned gate with no button. I prefer the patterned gate because it's easier to shift to the correct position without looking at the indicator, but both are equally safe. GM, Ford, and Nissan typically use straight gates, while Toyota settled on the patterned gate ~16 years ago.

Glad Ford caught and did the recall early. There were severe safety issues with the Tacoma's CPS failing on interstates in compromising situations but people defended the CPS like it's not important. It took about a year for that recall to happen.
