I think it will be faster. Once TNGA-F is implemented, all of the BOF vehicles will be built on the same (scaled) platform. The new Land Cruiser will likely be coming in 2020 as a 2021 model. Based on discussions, the LC, and Tundra will likely come first with the 4Runner and Tacoma right behind. I'd guess a 2022 model for the new Truck and 4Runner if not sooner.

Seems crazy if they do all 4 models within 2 years like that

    I could see LC/Tundra 2021/2022
    next 4runner 2023/2024
then 2 years after tacoma 2025/2026

Totally different situation bud. 2008 recession, higher gas prices driving more fuel efficient car sales and no competition in mid size segment. Mike Sweers is currently in Japan already working on moving the truck to the new TGNA-F platform. The 2nd gen didn’t see an midcycle refresh till 2012 that’s 7 years in, 3rd gen is seeing one 4 years in.

I think we will see a major update for the tacoma around 2022, along with the Ranger. When i say major i mean something regarding powertrain.

All this competition is making toyota having to update sooner.

Same truck, minor cosmetic changes. Nothing worth popping a woody over.

And, it seems LED headlights will come on limited only, and pro trims as well I’m assuming. Not much of anything for TRD sport/OR and below.

Does Toyota do small incremental upgrades on their other vehicles? Seems like the Tacoma adds in little pieces every year... electric rear window slider, auto dimming lights, power seats... all these are small upgrades between years that seem like they easily could have been part of the truck since the 3rd gen got released.

Sounds about right but make sure to distinguish Land Cruisers.

The current 150 series Prado (and 5th generation 4Runner, since it's a kissing cousin) is old even by traditional school Toyota standards, having been introduced in 2009. The 120 series (4th gen 4Runner) ran 2002 to 2009 and the 90 series (our 3rd gen 4Runner) before it 1996 to 2002.

The current 200 series LC was introduced in 2007 and Toyota is pretty consistent on decade long cycles, the 40 series and 70 series excluded. The 55 lasted 13 years, 60/62 went 9 years, 80 series went 8 (not including Venezuela where it went 18) and then 100 went 9 years.

So the Land Cruisers are both due for new versions. Can't see the big wagons and Prado converging though. But I could see the Land Cruiser in the U.S. no longer being the same global one. There's a 4 door wagon 79 Land Cruiser to perhaps replace the 200 series with the United Nations and all that so the soft luxury ones could easily just be a Sequoia with a different name.

Then consider the Hilux just got an 8th generation in 2015. So it hasn't run its course (also usually 5 to 10 years historically) and Tacoma can probably run out a 3-year cosmetic refresh. So if Toyota does want to converge pickups globally (big if since Tacoma and Hilux aren't nearly as related as Prado and 4Runner) they'll run the clock as long as possible on both.

Not to mention the 2nd gen Tacoma lagged the 4th gen 4Runner by 2 years even though both are vaguely 150 series derivatives. So your timeline make sense. Perhaps they'll need time to retool the Mexican Tacoma plant to make the global truck before changing San Antonio.

If there's a real question it's the Tundra in my mind. Does it perhaps stay/become closer related to the utility Land Cruiser? The 70 series has been around a really long time, 1984 with only two significant changes. To the coil front end in 1999 and the new body style (losing its flat fenders) in 2007. I don't see how Tundra could go to TNGA-F and shrink. But I also can't imagine a scenario where a 70-series refresh or replacement would be IFS either and there's zero chance of the Tundra getting a solid front axle.

Toyota and Apple's product development models are very similar IMHO. The iPhone is rarely the most advanced phone in terms of features - yeah, iOS is probably the most stable and secure and their processors tend to kick ass, but things like screens, cameras, etc., they tend to lag behind competitors and release phones w/o the latest tech, then they can unveil...wait for it... an OLED screen years after the competition has released it. But when they do decide to jump on the bandwagon, shit tends to work and be relatively stable.

Toyota could have easily released a 2016 with CarPlay, power seats, LED headlights... they clearly knew they were in demand and would go over well and had the tech in-house and present on other vehicles. But if they did that, would be hard to deliver tangible upgrades... as-is, deliver a vehicle that's good enough to attract buyers, but omit just enough that you can trickle in "new" features each year to get people to upgrade and keep the spotlight on your product.

Nothing new here. And just like Southwest keeping their costs low by using 747s across the board, serviceability is key and keeping all these tacos on the same power trains keeps manufacturing costs, parts backlogs, and technician training low.

Still no pics of Army Green? That color looks new too, right? It's not dark enough to be cement and it's definitely not silver... but certainly no Army Green I've ever seen either?

Can't lie, the apple carplay would be convenient, but that's about all that's of interest to me.

I see where your coming from with some of this, but it's not like Toyota released a conservative-yet-stable product when they gave this truck Entune. Unfortunately, it's an utter disaster that they have had to remove features from since launch.
