Can someone explain to me what exactly lockers do? Which they'd suggest is best one? Are they hard to install? And if installing one on a prerunner would improve traction in sand/mud rather than selling truck for 4wd?

I have a locker on my prerunner. When driving normally only one wheel spins (the back right). with the locker engaged both back wheels will spin which yes helps traction while offroading

    Welcome to the forum!

There are many different types and brands.
Lockers have been discussed many times before. Use the 'search' button up in the blue bar (towards the right side). Search for "Lockers" in the search box. Lots of information at your fingertips.

    Also....search www.google.com
    Type in:
    offroad lockers
    lunchbox lockers
    seletable lockers

Soooooooooooooooo much information. Lunchbox lockers are easy to install and are inexpensive. Selectable lockers are very expensive and are not easy to install (better left to a professional)

lockers forces the differential to spin both wheels on the same axis. in comparison to the differential converting the torque to the wheel with less traction.

The locker literaly forces both wheels to spin at the same rate.

with that said, a locker kicks ass. lockers put a prerunner one step above any other open diff 2wd.

Thank you all very much glad to be here love this place. Had my taco 2 years now don't know why I've never joined before. The cheaper easy to instal one you speak of, is it cheaper in the way it'll break real easy to?

I don't do a ton of off road craziness and not to ruff of a driver if that helps

If you want to do any offroading, having a locker will help a lot. If you did "a ton of offroad craziness" then you could sell your truck and buy a 4x4

Here's another situation... what about getting stuck in ice/snow? I live on Vancouver Island, BC Canada and I have to drive in snow a few times per year, and maybe a few more times through the snowy parking lot up at the ski hill. Would getting a 2wd with a locker be reasonable? I recently got a 4x4 Ext cab Taco just for that reason of rare/occasional snow use. Would the 2wd with locker have been a reasonable (and much cheaper) option?

keep the 4x4, I wish mine was a 4x4 instead of just a prerunner but having a prerunner does make wheeling a lot more fun since its more difficult ha. Sand and Snow are tough for prerunners but the key is to keep momentum. Ice is all about being very light on the gas and careful when you are braking.

yes it could have worked and it woulda be a little cheaper, but if you ended up getting a locked 2wd and got stuck in ice/snow you woulda regretted not gettin a 4x4 haha. just gotta weigh your options

Lockers are sweet. IMO a 4X2 with a locker could hang with a 4X4 without a locker in most off road situations.

Dang, where were you guys a few weeks ago!?

So, for completeness sake, is it an easy job to get the lockers put on a stock 2wd?

It's a common job, maybe not a job that you would want to get done in your garage unless you are good with that kinda stuff.

    ^^
it can be done depending on how mechanically inclined you are. also different lockers and easier to put in than others. like a lunchbox locker can be put in pretty easily but another locker like a selectable locker for example the arb air locker is better done by a professional

It depends on what type of locker you want.

There are different types!! Did you do any researching yet?

Lunchbox lockers replace the spider gears. THey are cheap, easy to install, have 'strange' on-road characteristics, and are ALWAYS locked.

Then, there are Diff carrier replacement type lockers. The replace the entire differential carrier which is highly involved because you also need to RESET the ring & pinion gears. Very expensive, and not easy to install. Gears need to be setup properly or they won't last very long. Selectable Lockers are the best because you can turn it on or off. It's best to ride on the street without the lockers engaged.

So that you tube video is a example of what a locker does?

I put a powertrax rear locker on my 95 ext cab 4X4. Awesome performance!! I think it was $485 installed.
