So earlier this week I came in to the dealership to have my third brake light replaced due to water leaking into the cab during our rain storm. Seems this is a common problem and the brake light seal is not sealing properly.
Ok so that’s taken care of until the next rain storm.
So the following day after having my third brake light replaced I noticed my paint was flaking on my rear driver side passenger door. First thought I had was that the dealership service men damaged it. Looking at it closer it looks like the paint isn’t bonding properly and the flaking is only going to continue. I haven’t seen any other reports of this happening to anyone else.
So I just dropped off my truck again at the dealership so it can be inspected by a director. I’m hoping this can be taken care of with no headaches and taken care of properly. 2B671AFD-E639-4020-B36C-22CCB4B47B91.jpg

You should see my 15 RAV4, clear coat failing all over the place. Toyota doesn't do paint good enough.

That sucks. I don't get why they just don't do a better job on the paint. I understand they're trying to save money but come on. Did you take your RAV 4 to get it checked to see if they would take care of it?

All tied into environmental regulations. It’s not that Toyota isn’t doing a good job, it’s that they have their hands tied with having to use low quality paint.

Have you owned that truck since new? Sure looks like, a repair has been done there before. You can see the bad job they did repairing it. If you owner it since new, possible damage done at dealership, or port before you took delivery of it.

True, Fortunately I'm not having clear coat issues other than that small section and how the paint is bonding.

Yeah I bought it new and I actually saw it trailered in. It hasn't been repainted and looks like the defect came like this from factory.

That defect is due to the application process. If it were due to "environmental regulations" literally every vehicle on the road would look like that.

A lot of the early 3rd gens had the weather stripping replaced. Was yours?

Could of been repaired in factory, not every thing comes off assembly line without damage. Compare this that side to other side. Pull rubber back, look for paint line. That sure looks like poor body work (repair).

Not that I know of. If it was replaced it was done before I took delivery of it. It's funny to see some small indentations on the upper portion of the flaking. Almost as if a prybar was used to remove the weather strip.

That's what I'm thinking. Good luck. I hope they take care of it for you.

I pulled the weather strip back a bit to see how far in the damage went. I did the same on the other side which was fine. I checked all edges, texture, and any signs of overspray to see if there was any repair work done. I didn't notice anything. Only thing for me to do is check paint thickness to see if I get any readings that are completely different from the rest of the truck.

That is definitely post damage repair... and poor bodywork as well. Perhaps take in to a good body shop for an estimate, that would verify to the dealer that the vehicle was damaged and repaired before purchase, making the warranty applicable.

The reason I'm saying possible body work was done. I you look above and below where paint is flaking. Above about an inch you can see body filler, and below a few inches, you can see it again.

Any updates on this? Was the dealer able to cover it? I pretty much have the same flaking in the same place on the same door. I was just rinsing it with a garden hose today (not a pressure washer) and the paint started peeling right off the primer...
