Looks like it's not out of the question, at least for the 4Runner, Toyota revealed an updated 4Runner instrument panel yesterday but mistakenly showed one that only redlined up to 4500 instead of 6000 on the current v6 engine. When asked Toyota brushed it off. A diesel 4Runner sounds pretty damn cool. If Toyota is considering that then I don't see how they couldnt be considering the same in the Tacoma, we shall see.

From the SAME article. “diesel is presently not part of our strategy for North America. We are still bullish on conventional engines, hybrids and fuel cell technology.” We greatly regret the error.

So thanks Jalopnik and @PrimerTaco for absolutely nothing.

Yeah, that’s a good point, but the fact that the cluster uses both MPH and Fahrenheit is the only thing that gives me hope. If it was metric, I’d figure it would just have been some marketing guy that made a blunder accidentally picking out the wrong stock image for the overseas Prato or something.

About zero chance the first introduction of a diesel in the US would be in the 4Runner

It couldn't be a case of the graphic designer having no clue about correct RPMs could it?

Maybe. Maybe not. A diesel seems unlikely, yes. All I’m saying is the fact that it was in Fahrenheit and MPH gives it maybe a slim chance as opposed to no chance.

So did the 2020 Tacoma images revealed yesterday and on the 2020 Tacoma page on Toyota.com...

The gauge exists, its clearly a U.S. engine (MPH / F) and the redline alludes to perhaps a diesel. You really don't think there's a chance that the image was slipped by mistake.

This is the simplest explanation and probably the most likely. That isn't even a photograph, its a rendering. The designer probably pulled from various stock images and nobody thought to match the tach readout to the model.

Agreed, makes the most sense, but figured I would post at least the article and something for diesel fanboys to chew on. Of course leave it to TW people to go full *****d about it. Everyone chill. lol.

You are reading way to far into this. The tak is not even close to being in production and things could completely change. The 2020 Tacoma is actually scheduled to be produced and WAY farther in the design and production stage. So I'd take your comparison with a grain of salt.

Give me a break, should we also be reaching and reading in between the lines for everything else? Example; Its 84 degrees meaning they are testing this in a warmer climate! Let's create a thread! It's got 287 miles on the odometer with a full tank of gas! That's like 287 miles a gallon! Make a new thread! Look the engine oil temp isn't fully warm! That means intercooler! Start a thread! It's a digital mock up just stop.

Think you need to chill out dude. Its just a thread and a discussion, maybe it wont happen, likely, sure its a whole bunch of more likely scenarios and probabilities but sorry it got your panties in a twist.

I was in a dealership earlier this week and was told that turbo motors would be a real possibility for the redesign of the T4R, Tacoma, and Tundra. Also claimed to know someone that is working at the plant that is building the diesel heads for the Tundra. Until it happens, I believe nothing.

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
I am hoping they work with Ford and strike a deal to put the new 7.3 gas engine from the upcoming new SD into the Taco.

    We can hope!!
