Is there any chance in hell that future updates over the air will allow us to have Apple/Android in 2016-2019 stock audio system?

I see 2020 will have both... but the head unit is a step back in time with actual knobs/buttons. I like the aesthetic of the flush head unit....but would love car play since the Toyota Interface is like using crayons and construction paper

Is there pics of the 2020 HU? I've read in another thread that there was a TW member who was involved with designing the HU for the 2020's and that it would be easy to swap out with current 3rd gen trucks. I'd love to get Android Auto in my truck.

I’m hoping for an upgrade option like Mazda has done for some of their previous models MY16 and up I believe. For Mazda it’s 5-600 dollars installed or the parts can be bought online for around 150. That is what I’m hoping for myself for the prior Tacomas.

It’s possible, Subaru and Mazda added it to previous years. I don’t know the details of Mazda but Subaru was a simple update at the dealer which added CarPlay.

I really wish Toyota would allow an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto update, but I suspect it will never happen.

Mazda was more involved. I had to remove a good portion of the interior from the gear selector to the head unit. All of that was to run a new usb hub. Of course it did require a software update for completion. Not scary, but time consuming steps that I would repeat for a Tacoma for the same end result.
