I have been stopped at chain control before to see if I have a set by CHP.

I carry them because I live here.

Chains have gotten me out of some hairy situations.

Up to you what you want to do.

I know if I was doing chain control inspections and that thing pulled up. I would make them stop, have them roll down the window, then proceed to just stand there pointing and laughing at them til they were so embarrassed and confused with the most dumbfounded look on their face. Priceless!:rofl::rofl:

If you live up there, chains yes, you plan on not being stuck because road conditions, yes. But now days if your coming from the valley they close the hwy when it gets that bad.

Let me add this. If conditions require chains you should not be up there wheeling. Your asking for trouble. Rookies!

Where are you located at? Your profile says Washington, I’m guessing you relocated. If so, welcome to the area. Good bunch of people in this area, except for that Fernando guy. :p

How about using chains not cables on trail during winter? I have a set of chains and it will be good to test it on trail.

    Did we use chains? No
    Was I alone? No
    AT tires suck ass? Yes
Rookie? Me not really, I lead most of the time, and have pushed a few guys on here to be braver then they were a few yrs ago.
But I know when to turn around, when to stay home and not risk it, and have never chained up my taco. :muscleflexing::brianr:

Dude if you need chains one its icy as fuck, or 2 your tires suck.
Snow wheeling is for guys with bigger tires MT is best or an aggressive AT. Good tread, and conditions. Only go as far as your able to turn around, never go alone, always have a back up plan, food water and warm gear.
Never go beyond your rings limits. Be smart.
Winches and recovery gear will be needed. Never been on a good snow trip that we didnt use a winch or pull ropes.
All that said MET is full of good wheeling and lots of jeeps to save you. Go there.
Edit:Front and rear recovery points as well.

Solo. During a blizzard warning last year. Cutting fresh track by yourself isn't for everyone but it is enjoyable. I do agree about the backup plan. My rig always has a 40L backpack with my bivi, sleeping bag, warm clothes, stove, pot, top ramen. I just call it my go bag. As in, when I'm solo and the shit really hits the fan I can grab that bag and go. On foot.

Nice but that looks like very little snow. There is feet in the area they are talking about going. Right now with a storm adding more.
Be smart and not dumb, is what im saying. Right now is not rookie time, and not the un prepared. Stay to lower elevations or MET
The land of rookies, and everyone one else.
