Nissan Frontier vs Tacoma TRD Sport

I've had the opportunity to drive a family member's 2015 Frontier (Auto) on several occasions (long trips, short trips). It may be dated, but it has plenty of power and would handle most of the tasks these trucks will typically be put through with zero issues. The model I've driven is a 4x4 double cab cloth version. I will admit if the interior had been updated it might have been more of a contender in my purchasing decision. That being said for the money I can not discourage someone to buy one regardless of its dated aspects. It has been a dependable truck for them to this date with zero issues. I wonder how many sales Nissan has lost because of their decision not to update that truck. They certainly had a shot at my business.

 

They are probably a little nervous about spending the cash on it, they redid the Titan and sales went down.

 

No kidding. I liked my old '07 2wd, and when I went out truck shopping, the idea of the PRO-4X was on my mind, but every Frontier looked almost exactly like the 6 year old truck I was leaving. Feature-poor, decor hadn't changed. They're fixing it. They just released the new Titan not too long ago, right? Frontier is next in line.

 

I think the price on those new Titans has more to do with the downturn in sales than the redesign.

Whoever they have as the lead designer at Nissan needs to be punched in the face. Most of their lineup look terrible.

 

Agreed! Nissan took a real nosedive when Renault took over.

Damn things are so bad that any parents owning one should be immediately charged with child abuse.

Every time a Nissan is sold, God gives a kitten HIV and prolongs the life if your shittiest neighbour by 10 years.

 

I think the Outback could stand more aggressive lines for sure. The Crosstrek looks a *little* more aggressive.

If they did an Outback "Adventure" trim or something like that that made it's lines more aggressive, gave it a turbo like the WRX, a manual tranny option/or regular 8 speed auto (not CVT), a 1" lift, slightly more aggressive 17" wheels/tires, and put on some underbody "armor" I think it would be the perfect car for what most active/lifestyle folks want/need.

 

I am 6'3". The lack of a dead pedal hump on the floor in the Frontier for my left foot to rest on caused me to move my left foot towards the seat. This in turned caused my left knee to constantly pressed against the left door panel.

Yeah, "next year" has been the promise for awhile with NISSAN and the next Frontier. I think they blew their money wad on the Titan redo and held off on the Frontier refresh for the USA market until the new Titan has been out for a bit.

 

...and add low range! That would be my next vehicle.

 

I have a 2017 Frontier for work and it's no faster than my Tacoma in a 1/4 mile. The Frontier does feel quicker off the line since the torque comes on quicker. The Frontier also shifts smooth as butter. Otherwise it feels like it was designed in the stone age. Also, watch the iihs crash videos. The Frontier crumbles where the Tacoma is solid. Safety wise the Tacoma is light years ahead. As our family road trip vehicle, this is important to us.

 

I had a 2012 pro4x and. 2014 pro4x. Now that I finally have my Tacoma, the only thing I miss about the frontier is the power. Nissan had better visibility over the hood and power seats if you’re into those. Also after I took the 2014 off-roading once, I had a few noises that never seemed to go away. Now that I have the Tacoma, I wish I would have gotten it much sooner.

 

I had the same year NISMO with the auto. That VQ engine was a rocket. Solid box frame like you said and came with everything that the Taco didn’t as standard equipment

 

Awesome I really liked the power but the seats were tuerrible.

 

I admit to being a Nissan guy for a few years. They did build quality products back in the day but my experience with the trucks was ok. I had a manual v6 4x2 which was a slug to say the least. In comparison to my Toyota of similar year it was below par in interior materials. The plastics all had horrible feel inside like a cheap trash can feel it was weird. The exterior plastic faded like hell and I was constantly chasing ways to spruce up faded parts. The cushion fabrics wore very different and it was hard to clean with the texture Nissan used if you had a spill. Not in the Yoda its was the opposite. I had a headliner problem in my Nissan that was ridiculous and a very expensive fix not a lick on the Yoda. In the Nissan I had to shell out quite a bit to get her options where in the Yoda it was the opposite almost perfect in stock form. The carpet wore some terrible spots in my Nissan not so in the Yoda. Sorry to be so critical but I am not kidding when you keep a vehicle as long as I do you can make comparisons. I will give Nissan this , they made things very easy to work with, I could give my 13 year old some tools and he could figure it out on that truck. Its amazing that engineers complicate things so much now days. If you can stand wearing a cheap suit at a playboy party I say go with a Nissan. If you at least want to feel like you get what you pay for get a Toyota.
