I have a 2018 M/T TRDOR (stock exhaust), and I've always love the low rumble grumble I get when driving. I had the chance to drive a 2018 A/T TRD Sport for a couple of days this week, and there is no rumble. As a matter of fact it sounds like any regular car. It has the same engine as mine. I'm thinking of getting a TRD Sport for my girl, but the difference in the engine/exhaust sound is kinda bothering me. Any ideas why this is so? Anyone else have this same observation? Off-Road owners, Sport owners..chime in?

Bump. I am actually quite curious about this. I am wondering there is an issue with the TRD Sport.....

99% sure there is no difference in exhausts. Possibly the way you drive your manual letting it rev higher before shifting.

The exhaust is the same between the models unless you had the TRD exhaust as an added option.

This, my 16 SR5, 17 and 19 TRD OR all sounded/sound exactly the same. In your head OP.

lol nah I'm pretty sure my earwax buildup at it's normal level. Unless I was graciously gifted a TRD Exhaust, I feel like it could be the revs, but I'm 100% sure it sounds different. Well ok answer me this. Off-Road owners, do you hear a low rumble with your trucks?

Its in your head dude. Its the same exhaust and engine between sport and OR, unless you have an aftermarket or TRD exhaust it will produce the exact same exhaust note between the two trims.

Ok bro, I know this is a few years old so call this an update. I just spent a couple weeks driving different models of Toyota Tacomas 2023. There is NO WAY the sport has the same exhaust. As a matter of fact the Sport should have the name changed to DOG! The Off-Road was DEFINITELY throatier and the throttle response was much more attentive to anyone’s driving needs. Maybe the programming is different for the Off-Road vs the Sport but I felt the suspension of the Off-Road was superior as well. I drive on Long Island and as much as they spend on fixing the roads they are a disaster but the Taco OR is awesome to plow through, over or around them. Needless to say I bought a New 2023 Taco OR and am loving it!!!

my question to you all would be, is the exhaust in any way more high performance? I don’t want to go Ina be drop the money for headers and a nice exhaust and have zero improvements in hp and gas mileage. Input?

Still the same, no difference in the performance or the sound. OR still rides plush.

Respectfully disagree. The “performance” may be the same but I went from dealership to dealership testing one Sport and and Off-Road and they are not the same output of sound, handling or responsiveness.

are both trucks you test drove the same cab configuration and bed length? if not, that may be slightly changing the exhaust sound and what you perceive inside the cab.

i have a Sport and 'rumble' would not be my choice of words to describe the exhaust.

i do not think there is any disagreement among members here that the OR and Sport ride and handle differently. that is intended by the manufacturer.

The exhausts are exactly the same. You can verify this for yourself by looking at the part numbers.

Intake, engine, exhaust and tune all the same on the Sport and the Off Road.
No reason for one to sound or perform differently.
The Sport has street tuned suspension while the Off Toad has a softer plusher ride.

    So what have we determined?

Well, We can scientifically conclude the Off-roads smooth hood has more rumble and performance than the Sports hood scoop.

We can close the thread now.

    (Happy Wednesday doods)

If you are looking for a different exhaust sound, here is the TW Y-Pipe discussion. I was looking at a Y-Pipe before I got my Cat shield.
