2018 leaking rear diff

Accept what you want... I brought it in and they tightened it and cleaned it off. If there is an issue it is noted and they will fix it if it continues. The seepage was minimal.

 

I vaguely remember reading something that said Toyota was moving to a different place for diffs, but that article may have not applied to Tacoma's, would have to see if a 2019 still says that.

 

Yes, You should take it in. This happened to my 2016 Tacoma. Took it in and they changed the gasket, put in new diff oil and re-torque all the bolts. No problem since ;-)

 

Tightening the bolts to spec has generally been the first step the dealer takes. They'll tighten them, clean the diff, and send you on your way.
If that fixes the issue, you're golden. If not, then you return to the dealer for a more invasive, and lengthy, fix.

Some owners have also had the leak disappear after installing a better breather, but others say it made no difference.

 

Mine looked similar and when I took it in for my 10,000 mile oil change I had them look at it and they checked it out and told me it was nothing to worry about. Mine is a 2018 by the way.

 

Yea rear diff. Had to go back 6-7 times to get it fixed.

 

What exactly was the problem?

 

That I don’t know. I don’t know if it was just the dealer tech not installing parts right or a warped diff. I just know that Toyota acknowledged it was a problem and agreed to buy my truck back.

 

What was it doing? Actively dripping or what?

 

Did they give you what your originally paid?

 

Brakleen the grease or oil off the cover. Tighten bolts and give it a couple weeks . Then see about seeing if the dealer or shop will replace the gasket. Shouldn't be a big deal . If the gasket was wet and it is of an absorbant cork type it may weep out some . I wouldn't be too alarmed . I did own a Jeep for a decade though .

 

Just tighten the nuts..... stupid simple.

 

Just kind of scared to mess with it before Toyota looks at it. Don’t want them to think I tampered with it.

 

The leaf springs, frame and a few other things on the 2nd gen remained an issue the entire 10 years.

Just got under mine. 2019 assembled in baja, diff says HINO MOTORS MANUFACTURING. So possibly US or Japan made I'm happy with either.

 

I believe when your vehicle is bought back you sign a disclosure not to speak about the settlement.

 

Wow that is interesting, maybe that article I read a couple years ago is correct.

 

I just hopped under mine. It says Hino mfg and made in Thailand both. No sign of leakage at 4,500 miles.
