The SR5 is over priced. I paid 27k for my TRD Sport used

 

Agreed. I paid 29k for my used 2016 DCLB Sport 4x4

 

Get the 19 and dont do line x. It's pointless and there are better bed coating systems anyway.

 

For the price difference get the new 2019. You cant go wrong with new, and new truck smell is intoxicating... while it lasts!

In my area (Midwest) the market is flooded with 2016 & 2017 TRD OR and Sport models in the 15-30k mile range for $29-32k. All 4x4s. I just got a 2018 TRD OR w/ tech & Premium for $33,900. Only had 6,000 miles on it, basically brand new IMO. Even had a bed cover. I was willing to travel a 200 miles or so for the right deal.

Why are you stuck on only those two trucks? That SR5 is way overpriced.

 

Buy new. You'll find the money to upgrade it.

Steal it from your kid's college fund. (kidding)

 

Thanks everyone for the replies! This is all really helpful! I didn’t even think about a composite bed not working with the linex so that will save me some money! I was also looking at the bed cover on Amazon. Another thread on here suggested they were a good option. I’m still in the early stages of shopping but in my area the dealership that had the most options is where I found the two I posted about earlier. The OR has really caught my eye and I’m hoping to test drive it later this week. I’m for sure gonna haggle the price because I feel like it’s pretty high. I plan to drive this truck for the next 20 to 30 years, I’m pretty obsessive when it comes to keeping up with maintenance, and plan to see just how long I can drive it until it just won’t go anymore. In the end the higher price tag for the new doesn’t bother me because it’s a brand new Tacoma! Another question I had was in my research I’ve read that the automatic transmissions on the 3rd gens had issues finding gears. Does anyone know if this is still true for the 19s or has Toyota solved the issue yet? Again thanks for all the help everyone! I’ll update again once I get the Taco!

 

The TRD-OR is the way to go. These trucks hold their value well and the 4x4 even more so. I’d rather have the 4x4 and not need it than to need it and not have it.

My brother has a 2007 sr5 double cab long bed and he wishes he’d gotten the double cab short bed with 4x4.

Get the new TRD Off Road and don’t look back. Keep it for forever like your dad and your son will do the same.

 

Get a 4Runner. Kids and passengers will thank you

 

As the others have said, go with the 2019 OR. You’ll likely regret it down the road if you don’t. You can always add a bed cover later a lot easier than trading your truck in for an OR. Good luck and enjoy!!

 

The used 2016 is more than I paid for my 2017 SR5 DCSB V6/Auto 4x4 when it was new. Just sayin ...

 

I got my 2017 TRD off-road for $29k with 35k miles, and I’m in CA lol.
I would keep looking for an SR5, it doesn’t sound like you need the Offroad. SR5’s are plenty capable off road as well, most people don’t need a locker.

If you can find an sr5 for under $28k then go for it! If not, get the Offroad with all the tech you want

 

IMO you have much more purchasing power going new, I’m sure you can negotiate for the invoice price or call around until you do

Other tips:
Avoid all add-ons. you can alway get better / cheaper floor mats, bed cover aftermarket.
Decline Gap insurance. Depending on your down payment and insurance company it’s probably not needed.

2019 is a better choice

 

Get brand new TRD 4x4 OR DCSB with Tech package. MSRP of $38, 400... was able to drop the price to $33,900...

if you really think you'll keep it 20 years, get the brand new one. Hell, if you're going to keep it 6 years I'd get the new one.
