    Seems that a career change is in order. Your in a perfect position to start fresh. I personally would not consider starting your own business and risk your nest egg. Go volunteer at your local animal shelter, food kitchen or United way etc. ponder your next career cause I know I would be lost without working. Your job must be horrible if you dislike it that much and don’t need the money. Good luck in your endeavors.

    Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
    I'm truly curious too. How in the hell you guys pulling this off? My wife and I both have fairly good paying jobs, no kids, a small house, and one car payment and can't put shit in the bank. I'm in my mid 40s and will retire when I'm dead. What is the secret?

    If financials are solid, then as long as you have something to keep your mind and body busy I think you are golden. Like others have stated you should have a hobby. Personally I think you might want to think about public service of some kind. Don't withdraw, be part of society. Giving is so much better then taking. Good luck & best wishes whatever your endeavors. It is awesome that your Missus supports your thoughts.

    I appreciate all of the responses so far. I have several low cost hobbies such as mountain biking, hiking, spending time outside. We vacation quite a bit locally, but my job is such where even on vacation, I'm replying to emails. I probably haven't been completely away from work in 10 years.

    I would never be able to take more than one week off in my current position. I have 4 weeks off and have given vacation time back many times due to being unable to use it before it expires.

    I envy you. I’m 52 and facing termination at the end of the month due to an injury I received here at work. Being Diabetic and having other health issues I have to have insurance and now facing having to start all over again. The disability restrictions I have will make it very difficult to find anything I can do within my skill set. I’m doing everything I can to keep working.

    Honestly my grandmother help set me up since I was a kid teaching me the market an about investments(she’s a stock broker,financial planner, investment consultant). I personally started investing my money into property and was gifted 100 shares of a stock of my choice for my conformation summer 2002(Apple at $15-20 a share). From there i saved and did small things. When I joined the marine corps i got stationed in Hawaii I got into the housing market here and just worked my way from studios apartments to houses. Then around 2015 I said fuck in I don’t feel like working anymore. Sold off some of my property for really good gains, bought a smaller home and invested the rest. Also invested in start ups at the time and those have been hit or miss but when they hit they hit good.

    I have a Roth and a traditional workplace 401k. Saved consistently and aggressively my entire life. I've honestly saved since mowing lawns at 12 years old.

    Like others have said, unless you have low cost hobbies it's gonna get boring sitting at home. Find a different line of work, even if it makes less. You didn't mention what you do for a living, maybe just a company switch would fix the stress?

    Myself and most of my similar aged former colleagues (we're in tech) have found less demanding work at different companies to take the stress off.

    Simply put, you don’t retire at 31 yrs old. Either you are doing something for income, or have a healthy trust fund.

    I guess some people’s idea of retirement differs from others.

    @Notoneiota, not sure what you’re doing man? Kinda doesn’t make sense to me.

    I do agree. It would not be retiring in the traditional sense. I'm fortunate to have a spouse who brings home a healthy income. The two of us also share the same savings goals, we've also kept spending low. I'm only contemplating at this point. I believe moving from a demanding job to one without responsibility would definitely benefit me.

    That would be my suggestion. Since money isn’t a problem find a job that you enjoy. Go be a part time state park ranger or something.
