Assuming just the outers its super simple. If doing the inner too its a bit more complex (but not to much).

    But its literally...

    1) Jack front up
    2) Take tire off
    3) Use a paint pen/sharpie to draw a match marking line from the inner tie rod, backing nut, and outer tie rod (makes it easier to count and also make sure everything lines back up the same)
    4) Take cotter pin out and then the castle nut
    5) Take hammer and beat on top of the outer tie rod to get it out of the spindle
    6) Now the fun part...getting the outer off the inner. If its not to rusty just use wrenches (one on the outer tie rod flats and one on the inner tie rod flats) and itll unscrew it.
    7) Now unscrew the outer tie road....count turns.
    8) Grab new tie road and thread it back on count turns to match old one. When done the match markings should all match up again.
    9) Insert tie rod back into spindle, thread nut on, tighten it down tight, once tight play the "match castle nut opening to cotter pin hole" game
    10) Insert cotter pin and bend it
    11) Put tire back on
    12) Lower vehicle
    13) Now technically you should go get an alignment. But by counting the turns your alignment should be pretty damn close.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that new of models at a pick n pull. I think they end up somewhere else like LKQ where they part them out for decent profit.

Depending on the insurance company that totals the trucks out they’ll either go to CoPart or the other auction company to get auctioned off, a lot of times to international buyers, places like Pick-n-Pull don’t drop the kind of money that newer totaled Tacoma’s can still get

put a new plug and gas in it, make sure the bar oil port isn't plugged. Then buy a new Oregon bar and chain. Looking at the size of the motor I wouldn't go over 20". They can set you up with a bar length and a chain with the right dogs so it wont bog down and stall out.

Edit: You can also pick up a new head to rebuild it for a decent price.

I’m somewhat mechanically inclined. How easy is it for a consumer like me to rebuild the engine? Is a stihl shop my only source for parts?

Tell ya the truth, I don't know for parts anymore my brother is a faller and rebuilds all his. So if needed I hit him up, im sure you could check with your local saw shop, and they would give you some good advice.

Otherwise they are a simple 2 stroke motor not much to them. Great find and props of saving it vs it getting recycled.

If it runs now and you can find the bar/chain locally might behoove you to jump on it. Supposed to get sleet and freezing rain monday night. Might be alot of down trees and broken branches, depending on where you live.

    Thanks for the tips.

He had it for 225 but I got him down to $160 without bar and chain. He said he did tree removal and could use all the bar and chain he can keep.

I’d like to refresh the whole thing. I don’t need it for where I live, but I intend on taking it on trips. Truck saw, you could say.

This reminds me when I lived in Covington and it was one of those developments that had a rectangular street all around the inside perimeter. I hooked up a couple innertubes to the back of my hatchback honda and towed kids and adults around the complex all day and night. Kept a couple kids in the back with the hatch up as spotters. Ended up dumping one of the neighbors wifes around one of the better turns as it was a nice wide swing out. by the afternoon I had a line up on the sidewalk outside my house for kids and adults waiting for a ride. It was blast all the way into the night. Good times, Good times.
