I need some help. My Tacoma I bought brand new in 2013. Its a 4 cylinder. I drive it everyday with almost 100000 miles. Now I have a problem. During driving sometimes I push on the gas and it will go up to like 3000 RPM then the RPM shots down to like 1200 RPM. If I lift off gas and hammer it will take off like normal. Same thing if I'm driving sometimes it will be at 3000 RPM then loses power down to around 1200 RPM and I just leave my foot on there. After about 2 seconds it continues on like everything is perfectly fine. I have taken care to one toyota dealership and they don't know what wrongs with it. I have also taken to multiple auto zones and used different brands code reader. No codes. I've cleaned mass air flow sensor like 5 times. Please give me some other idea.

Is it getting enough fuel? Also the engine has the greatest stress on it when you hit the gas around 40mph... Could be an ignition coil going out? Just shotgunning here.

Could be a bad ecu. Have you had the battery tested? Is the alternator charging properly? Are your battery conections clean and tight? How about the grounds, clean?(body to frame and engine to frame)

No I have not had battery tested! I need to do that its same battery since I bought truck brand new. Alternator charging have not checked that yet. Battery I took off both positive and negative and cleaned them. There was corrosion all over it. But nothing improved or changed. Grounds I will check and clean.

    2" lift.
my truck exhibited similar symptoms about a year ago. it was the throttle body. I bought a used one from LKQ and haven't had it happen since. I guess the motor that regulates the butterfly was failing. my truck only had 38k on it at that time.

I'm going to guess it's a fuel or air issue.
Might be fuel pump or fuel pressure?

I was told that the truck didn't have a fuel filter. Is that true? I thought it might be gas, because sometimes my truck will sit for like 45 days without being driven. But I've ran all the gas out numerous times to near empty to make sure no condensation was in there.

I took that completely apart and checked the gasket. There was a bunch of black shit in there. It doesn't completely close! Is that normal?

The filter is in the tank.
It’s not easy to access with out dropping the tank or removing the bed.
Actually it’s considered a non serviceable part.
You just replace it when you have to, which is when it causes problems.
And if you go that far you might as well replace the whole pump.
    At least I would anyways.

Ok so this weekend I tested my battery and it was saying 12.7. So I was curious if that's accurate so I went to Oreilly and had them test the battery. Supposedly it was bad. Brand new in 2012 or 13 when I bought it. So anyhow I replaced that. Now I've noticed also lately if the lights are turned off. I press the brakes the odometer, clock panel, and the AC/HEAT lights all DIM. So like 2 or 3 years I changed the tail light on the truck cause somebody ran into my truck at the rifle range. I bought the new tail light on EBAY I think. Is it possible something is messed up in the wiring for the cheap tail light I bought and its causing all of these problems?

mine does not completely close. as 4 the black chit , did u clean ? ...my truk did same cutting out thing, throttle body cleaner solved it 95%.
    Then , running the rpm,s WAY up over normal ( not red-lined , and on a steep up-hill ) solved it to 99.5 %
I cleaned my throttle body without removing from engine cause I was told I could , I recommend removal for a thorough cleaning. Seeing all that chit going into intake was a bad feeling .I didn't realize how dirty it actually was . Have torque wrench and new gasket for re-assembly handy. Also maybe replace your air cleaner filter. good luck !!
