Electric is like death ,it's going to happen no matter what. I bet the saddle makers use to say "those mechanical horse carriages will never catch on" 500 miles before you need a 2 hr charge!! That will work if that statement is true.

 

Im not anti progress , I just don’t want all the hassles, inconveniences, problems associated with the electric cars.

 

You're right .As long as the problems occur they will never catch on. They have to have a long range and a very short charge time. Some of the claims really are not true. Sooner or later they'll get the plan working. They're getting closer every year. charging stations will have to be everywhere. The GM Volt claims to go 51 miles before the battery power gives out. Some of the auto gurus that test drove the Volt said it was more like 28 miles. You couldn't give me something like that.

 

The energy storage technology has quite a ways to go before "electric" vehicles become viable. Current energy storage technology is considerably more expensive and less efficient than internal combustion, and not to mention that the manufacturing is environmentally catastrophic (i.e., mining operations in 3rd world countries that we don't give a shit about). In the current state of the technology, it actually costs a lot MORE fossil fuel (think about the fleets of diesel heavy machines used in the mining operations) to manufacture the battery for an EV, than all the fuel that would be consumed by an ICE engine over the distance that the battery will last.

Fact is that current "electric" vehicles are actually electro-chemical vehicles. In order to become viable, the chemical part has to go, because the chemical part is both the source of the inefficiencies, and the cause of the unavoidable environmental catastrophe. The reversible chemical reaction is exothermic, and saps out most of the energy -- in both the charge AND discharge cycles.

Capacitors don't use a chemical reaction for energy storage. They just use an electric field, and thus are not subject to the great inefficiencies of chemical reactions -- means that you can actually charge and discharge them without the heat and time, and without nearly as much waste. The problem is that they have a much lower energy storage density than chemical batteries. A current supercapacitor based passenger vehicle would probably get you about 25 miles per charge, which is about an order of magnitude too low to be practical. Maybe if something like carbon nanotube supercapacitors was properly developed, it could yield a viable EV.

 

We will see way more hybrid drive vehicles before we see a flood of all-electric vehicles. Toyota themselves stated they were cancelling the 4runner to focus on selling hybrid drive only vehicles in NA by 2025

 

The Chevy Volt is an Electric/Gas car. The Chevy Bolt (Full Electric) goes 300-400m kilometres before it needs a charge. Tesla's go even further. Some day there will be a full electric Taco!

 

It basically already exists. It's a pickup designed for industrial/factory settings overseas. It's$12k brand new.

The Volt will go 28 mpg until the gas engines take over, GM says it will go 41 mpg on a full charge.
It MAY go 41mpg on level ground with one passenger 1 gal of fuel and no wind or heat or AC on. the 41 is a sales pitch. Their junk

The Volt doesn’t appreal to me but the full electric Bolt is pretty cool on paper

The Volt never gets the electric range promised. Haven't tried the Bolts long range yet, it is usually just used "in town", so no ones taken it out of town to see if it gets it's 300-400 kl rating. Obviously during winter months, the electrics drain much faster.
