Yeah no kidding, and although they have good prices, knowing they got these parts at no charge, still angers me;)

Look at it this way. The fleet company would have to pay 1 of their employees to run an ad, deal with flaky buyers, and then after finally selling the tailgate, they would have to pay income tax on the money received. Better to just walk away and not deal with it.

Now, the truck cap place see's lots of trucks. That's their only customers. So, a guy pulls in with a truck with a bent tailgate. "Hey, we've got a nice tailgate for your truck in the correct color. Are you interested?" If they can put a little extra money in the pizza and beer fund, I'm all for it.

I put the hose clamp on, I also tack welded a washer in the cable end so the cables won't come off but still swivel, I know what your thinking, what if I need to remove the tailgate.
Well, there are torx bolts that can be unscrewed, tweekers usually have a screwdriver for the hose clamp, but they never have torx bits. Besides, I've had trucks off and on my whole life and can't think of a time I ever took a tailgate off, just MHO

More than likely they won’t steal it. My tailgate before my accident was the same way and was never stolen. But once I got a new tailgate from my insurance I hose clamp it right away.

Honestly, Looks like typical Craigslist and a typical garage. When I deal with wrecked cars/trucks - these items are popular to scavenge - especially when you're dealing with side/ frontal impacts. You do have a good point as well, but then again - the chop shop world is huge so nothing really surprises me....

I did the quick, inexpensive antitheft clamps to my tailgate after see this thread and others like it! Cheap peace of mind.

Just two days ago at my hotel I noticed my tailgate was half shut. Opened it up and the cables were unhooked, I know I didn’t leave them that way. The hose clamp slowed them down enough to save me. Bad part is, I’ve only owned the truck a week. I ordered the tailgate lock kit for next time when they are more prepared.

How do they even unhook them. I've got clamps on mine but the gap is less than 1/4".

I don’t guess I follow you, they unhooked the support cables but couldn’t lift the gate off thanks to the hose clamp so they left it.

Uh, putting the clamp on the left side does nothing. I hope you put a clamp on the right side.
