Was watching some yootoobs about the 5VZ-FE emissions control system for fun (I'm a fun person, everyone says) to learn me more better about car things and saw someone pointing out the giant charcoal canisters in I think a V6 '99 four runner (same engine). I realized then that I'd never noticed them in my taco's engine bay, which seems pretty impressive given how big and obvious they looked in the video. Just ran out to the garage and sure enough my evap canisters are missing.

WTF am I looking at here? Some kind of "delete?" Is the previous owner stealing muh em pee geeze? Am killing the polar bears and spotted owls by dumping gas fumes in the air?

Oh I should note that I have no CEL, never smelt fuel anywhere around the truck (except that time I replaced the fuel filter and had to re-seat the flare nut) have good idle, and am getting about 18 MPG mixed driving on this shitty winter fuel.

Not all first gens or 5VZ-FE's are exactly the same - Toyota made little changes each year to various parts. The evap system moved out of the engine bay in later model year Tacoma's (01 or 02-04 - so yours for sure). Back by the fuel tank I believe.

Consider yourself lucky - you can mount other stuff there in the engine bay now :).

Oh... now that you mention it, I remember seeming some weird, black cylinder looking things under the truck at the rear when I was down there greasing zerks or replacing the drive shaft carrier bearing or something. Still, the rats nest looking thing where the canisters would go is a real eyesore. Shame on toyota for that aesthetic fail... right guys? who's with me?

If you did not have one your MIL would be your constant friend .

Your Truck would never pass emissions if you have testing where you are
