2018 leaking rear diff

Good on the dealer for making things right with minimal inconvenience to you.

Wonder if they filled your diff with the specified 75W-85 GL-5 fluid or just some bulk 90W gear oil. Probably not a huge deal either way, just one of those 'don't take it to the dealer unless you have to' situations.

 

No they can't. For any reason (except non payment). Of course they will want a waiver signed for their protection, but they have NO legal way to keep a vehicle.

 

My dealer never asked to keep my truck until it was done. They just lended me a loaner Bc I had no other car to drive while it was getting fixed.

 

Now it's probably going to howl...

 

I haven't read through entire thread but where are the 1st dt and 2nd gen diffs made?

They’ll use bulk 75W90.

We have a 2019 Corolla hatchback 2.0 that I just took in for 10k mile oil change. It specs 0W16 and the receipt said they used bulk 0W20. Which I’m fine with.

Whatever the case, they’ll even use 90wt in the tcase when it specifically specs straight 75W in the manual.

 

Hmm. Will that hurt anything in the long run? Not sure what it calls for or what they used.

About 10 months ago, the service dept. at World Toyota told me that if they found a leak in my diff. they would have to keep the truck for safety reasons. They would give me a rental until fixed. At that time they had no gaskets too.
I have no idea if it’s legal or not, just telling you what they said directly to me.

 

Seems like a lot of people in that thread have had diffs replaced. Trying to read through to see why (if there is a reason other than the sound)

 

It is basically just a harmonic sound, nothing to fear.

 

So this thread made me revisit this today...in July I took truck to dealer for regular service and mentioned about diff seeping. They tightened and told me to watch it. In September I took it back and they ordered new gasket and a few weeks later replaced gasket. I thought that would do it. But now I went out and took a look and...more seeping. Irritating. This time though it also looks damp around the front cone by the driveshaft. Have no idea what that means.

 

Won’t hurt anything, the spec 75W85 is for US cafe fuel standards, same diffs use 75W90 in other countries.

 

That sounds like the pinion seal. Are you lifted?

 

I'm not doubting you, just stating that they have to let you take it if you want. I wouldn't wait on a diff seal unless the leak was really bad or they gave me good rental. Not driving a Corolla for that lol.

 

I had probably the worst case I’ve seen on any of the multiple threads about this. Initial fix took over a month (loaner), and second time cured it but I had to get corporate involved.


You can see the welling up drops. Everything turned out fine. Just take it in and don’t take no for an answer. I had corporate get my dealers ass in gear and it was all photographed and documented. The service manager hates me now, oh well fuck em! That’s their job!

 

What was the final fix?

 

2X gasket and bolts had to be replaced. About 4-5 months after initial fix it did it again. I have a thread about it on here. Dealer was being a little bitch so corporate got them in line.

 

This was mine. They simply tightened the nuts and I have not had any more issues. This was like 20k miles ago or so.
