Fluid Film/Krown might be the only truck 'mod' that actually pays for itself over the course of several years in the Northeast.

That's what you want is the dust and dirt to cling to it. Causes a barrier.

I use body cavity wax on my truck, it dries shortly after spraying so no mess from dust and I can also work on the underside of the truck without getting it all over me.

You cannot paint cover fluid film, but it is easily removed with isopropyl alcohol, or brake clean, or windex.

Fluid film is not a mess if you don’t overdo it. It’s a great product.

I believe the notorious rust issues Tacomas had in the past is just that...in the past. No frames are immune to rust if not treated carefully, but Tacomas were especially prone to it in the past due to corner cutting on behalf of the steel manufacturers. Kobe Steel was one such company and they were the subject of some major lawsuits as a result...if you check out their webpage their have a profuse apology on the homepage lol.

So 3rd gen Tacomas escaped this misconduct by Kobe or only the later years such as 18 and 19?

Is this the stuff they use before a body cavity search? I didn't know they waxed buttholes.

The steel frame of a rusty 2nd Gen Tacoma was made in USA, correct me if I’m wrong.

I'm not certain but I believe the issue was "taken care of" after the 2012(?) Tacoma year, since the frame warranty business doesn't extend to any models after that and you don't really hear of the same dramatic rust issues happening on those years going forward. I'm not all that familiar with the 2nd gen warranty program so it may have been resolved even earlier than the 2012s. But I think 3rd gens are in the clear, so long as you still do you due diligence in taking care of your frame. Rust will happen regardless if you don't and you live in a rusty state.

I know Dana Corp makes (made?) Tacoma frames in the past, they're a American company...they also got in trouble for the rust issues back in the day. Although I don't know if they actually made the steel or sourced it from elsewhere (like from Kobe Steel maybe). Who knows...all I know is that Toyota wasn't the only one in hot water for the rusty frame fiasco.

    Interesting,

Unless I am wrong, the rust issue would be after the frame was made and painted or coated (poorly) stateside. I don’t see how the base steel could be responsible for the rust.

If the quality of the steel is not suitable for outdoor/corrosive environments, it'll rust through very quickly.

On a job site we had dewatering well casing and screen actually dissolve away in only a few months, on the other side of the spectrum is vanadium steel alloys (e.g. model T panels) which can be stored unpainted outdoors for extended periods of time.

After the paint you get right to the steel. Kobe steel was messing around with their quality to save money no doubt.

Modern steels are made with varying combinations of alloy metals to fulfill many purposes.[5]Carbon steel, composed simply of iron and carbon, accounts for 90% of steel production.[3]Low alloy steel is alloyed with other elements, usually molybdenum, manganese, chromium, or nickel, in amounts of up to 10% by weight to improve the hardenability of thick sections.[3]High strength low alloy steel has small additions (usually < 2% by weight) of other elements, typically 1.5% manganese, to provide additional strength for a modest price increase.

The way it went down for 1st gens...from what I remember reading in the news anyway...was Toyota got forced to do something about the problem due to lawsuits, and they in turn sued the crap out of Dana Corp. I'm not sure the details on who really cut corners but maybe it was both.

Absolutely the base steel can be responsible. Impurities and processes. There's even a steel that is DESIGNED to rust lol.

But even the most rust-prone steel can still be properly coated.
