First, This isn't a discussion of the operating systems. Start your own threads lol. What user interface you use is purely personal preference. Second, arguing without numerical benchmark data to back it up only proves a a lack intel. Third, Keyboard design in laptops has been a hot button issue for some time. Keyboard flex is a tail tail sign of a poorly constructed laptop. Feeling the burning temps on your fingertips shows a poor cooling design. A lot more goes into a good laptop than what operating system is installed on it. I personally can boot linux, osx, and windows vista, and 7 from my desktop. I spend most my time in windows bista because i prefer the interface, its what I am used to. This was a laptop comparison not a operating system competition. You guys are filling up my inbox lol.

If you wanna play games, go PC. If you wanna do anything else, Mac all the way.

I'd go with the MacBook Pro. Especially for graphic design. Gaming still isn't huge for Apple computers yet, but I surely can't be the only one that has noticed more and more games coming out for OS X?
If you are looking to save money in the long run, Mac is the best bet. $60 every 6 months to have a Windows machine reformatted to get your performance back to normal is just too much for me. (Unless you run your own reformats of course).
I love my 13 inch MacBook Pro, but as stated before, for graphics use, you might be better off with the 15 inch screen.

    What doesn't?

Everything you can do on a PC, you can do on a Mac. So why deal with reformats, viruses, spyware, and slowdown if you don't really have to. You can even run windows in OSX using Parallels if you really needed to.

I used to be a PC user, but switched to mac about 8 years ago and have never looked back.

Why would you need to reformat every six months? In the last year and a half I have had my current setup, I have reformatted 0 times. Most of these "computer issues" are simply people errors.

In the OP's current situation, I would go Alienware over the Mac. The reason is simple. Pound for pound, the Alienware is a better deal. If he will be gaming at all why go through the trouble of dual booting or running a Virtual Machine. Unless he has owned a mac before, he will be more accustomed to the operating system. Which will make him feel more comfortable with his purchase. If he needs to change settings or something simple, I'm sure he could figure it out instead of having to search google to find out how to do it on a mac.

And to whoever said something about taking it into an Apple store, the closest one to my house is over an hour and a half away. Not everyone has quick easy access to one. As for general pc repair, I'm sure there is one right down the road from about everyone.

Windows is "unsafe" or "a virus hotspot". I have 0 anti-virus programs on my computer. Why? I know safe computing habits. I don't need an anti-virus program taking up space on my computer. If you use a Mac like most do their PC, you will get viruses just as easy. It not the OS, it's the user. Now that Mac's are becoming more mainstream that means there will be more malware than before. If you can create a virus for Windows, you can create one on OSx.

I used a PC for many years as a video editing machine. If you are not familiar with working with graphics, it requires optimum performance. Your use of the machine may not allow you to see the effects of WinRot. I would notice serious increases in performance after reformatting my computer every few months.
This debate is a holy war and I just know that I am going to get destroyed just for giving my vote, .02, and personal experiences. Same thing happens when I talk to my friends about trucks.

I voted alienware. More bang for the buck, better hardware, better performance.

As to the OS, any serious user will spend a fair bit of time to tweak them to their preferences. I get a better match to my preferences out of Windows and Linux as compared to OSX. That's just preference.

As to programs, there are more available for free for Windows which is very good for my purposes. Different people have different needs there. As to productivity, everybody supports both so it's a wash. As for graphic design, Same programs are available for both, print houses support both. The only Mac benefits are they are more available with a color matched screen. Dell often has comparable screens too. And the second mac benefit to graphic design is that the printhouse weenies are mac users and get confused dealing with other formats even though binary compatibility has been around for decades now.

Reliability, they're the same hardware so you can't argue relilability in hardware. OS reliability, Apple has the potential for an advantage in that they severely restrict what hardware you can use. In the notebook world, that's a wash as both vendors do pretty good driver testing.

Sticking with mainstream apps, software reliability should be about even. Both are still too sloppy with memory management.

Service and support, both are nightmares if you're not competent in your own maintenance or have a handy friend who is.

This thread is so flippin' funny to see everyone getting all fired up!!!!!

I mean come on guys its just a computer. Who cares if I use a mac??? Who cares if krimson the skin head uses alienware???

The computers you have will be outdated in a matter of time.

OP.... if you are having this much trouble deciding.... just buy both.

I enjoy your input, it allows for further discussion of the topic:)

As for the video editing, maybe that was a sign you needed to upgrade your computer? Or it could mean you used it as a family machine as well and you had a lot of traffic on that PC (downloading). I encode Blue ray discs in under a day on my machine, and it hasn't hiccuped a bit:cool:

Well, when I built it, it was top of the line. But we all know that lasts about a day. Haha. It wasn't online, it was kept offline just so that I wouldn't have any risk of viruses and malware and such.
If I was still working with video, I would still have at least one PC for the simple reason that I was familiar with the software I was using and wouldn't want to dual boot on my Mac. As for video gaming, I prefer consoles to computers. So, I don't worry about games too much.

    Danding,
I would love to teach you how to reformat if you ever had any questions. If anyone is thinking of spending $60 send them my way. Also, file indexing for mac and pc is the same there for fragmentation will occur in the same mannor.
Rendering times for say photoshop or auto cad will be greatly reduced with a beefier video card. In this case that is the alienware.

Voted for the Alien- but only because the OP mentioned gaming.

I'm a Mac user thru and thru...Much more stable day to day than any PC I've used- and I'm a electrical/computer science major- so I don't need any lessons about how to use a PC.
