Good article, I do treat my tap water for chlorides and usually let it sit for 24 hours just to air out as well. My water comes out of the tap at about .25ppm ammonia, but that seems to reduce after it's been in the tank for bit.
The only thing I can figure is that the plants had a lot more ammonia and nitrates before the tank finished cycling, but from what I've seen with other people I feel like my fish should be able to keep up with what the plants need.

So they don't have dirt where you live? o_O
Hydroponics seems like a way to make something simple into something complicated. I guess if you like the science experiment aspect of it that's cool, but there are a lot easier ways to grow stuff.

My onions are up. Leeks not so much. Don't know if they are just being slow, or if maybe my seeds are old. The leek seeds are two years old. Sometimes two years is too old for things in the onion family. Oh well, if they don't sprout no big loss. If the onions didn't, that would be a different story.

I haven't tried planting anything but shrubs in the dirt at this house yet. When I looked at how much work and cost I'd have into that it didn't make sense this year, and I'm pretty new to gardening anyway.
Also I'm actually doing aquaponics, and not hydroponics. Currently all I do is feed my fish once a day, and check my water levels every couple days. So far everything is doing well except that tatsoi that just changed in the last week or so. For me it's easier than any other garden I've had, and I get to enjoy having an aquarium that doesn't require regular cleaning.
If I was trying to produce a large amount of crops this wouldn't be my first instinct, but as far as just wanting an aquarium that serves a purpose this has been a really fun experiment.

Aquaponics, huh. I guess hydroponics would be too simple. Glad you are having fun.
I'm mostly just joking with you. You do know you can put dirt in pots and grow stuff. It's pretty easy. Not much work, or cost. ;)

I’ve got lots of houseplants potted in regular soil, but where’s the fun in that?Anything I put outside has to combat all the critters and weather, so I’ll have to put some effort into building a garden at some point.
This was more about the experiment and getting my wife on board with an aquarium. If I really like it I can scale it up, and if it gets to be a pain I’ll just find plants I like to filter my aquarium and keep it small.
For now I’ll just have to use my truck when I want to play in the dirt.

How's growing in dirt working for you now?

I grew all 12 months with hydro.

I have lettuce, spinach and kale in my greenhouse that was doing great until just two weeks ago. We had a bunch of nights below zero with highs in the single digits. That knocked it back pretty good. The spinach and kale are recovering. The lettuce all the leaves are dead, but the roots are probably still good. Will see new leaves sprouting soon. Not quite 12 months gardening, but I'm getting closer every year. Not bad for northern Wyoming.

Well it looks like you answered your own question. Hydro = year round growth. Not to mention targeted yield growth. But hey, why actually F with anything interesting.

If I did hydroponics in my greenhouse it all would have froze solid and died way back in October. I could grow stuff in dirt inside my house year round no problem. I actually have a dwarf orange, and dwarf tangerine trees in pots that live inside my house through the winter, and in the greenhouse the rest of the year. As I said, if you like the science experiment aspect of it cool, do it.

I posted this here last year but hydroponics is great when you want to save space and water.

    Start:

    Three months later:

It yielded lots of strawberries, mint, peppermint, basil and 6 kinds of cherry tomatoes. In fact too many tomatoes.

    This much every day.

If you look close you can see a few garlics poking through. Perfect conditions for this time of year!

Its getting to the point where I’m thinking about my raised garden beds.
Are you guys making yours out of cedar?
    Is it kiln dried?

I didnt realize cedar was so expensive :bananadead:
