LSPI is a very real concern. For people who don't know, LSPI is pre-ignition aka super knock at low engine speed and very high cylinder pressures. I don't see it being a big concern on our particular setup mainly because the 7670 is not producing much pressure at 1700-1800 rpm.
But I do agree no need to lug in 6th if not necessary. 6th gear winds up so slowly because of the ratio. The engine really struggles to accelerate if you're in 6th, locked up under 60mph. 70+mph it does much better though.
Without a doubt boost or not I'd say never try to tow locked in 6th. 5th yes, on flat road but not 6th.

When it comes to mountain driving steep grades were screwed from a hardware point of view, and gear lock can help but it will never be perfect in D mode.
    1. Truck is a bit heavy
    2. Engine needs rpm to make torque
    3. The rpm difference between 4th and 5th is just dumb. If 5th gear was somewhere in the middle, that would of been nicer.. Our test truck in 4th at 70 is 3000+ rpm. Drop to 5th is about 2100rpm maybe slightly less. If 5th gear was closer to 2400-2500 rpm at 70 it would be perfect.

This is where gear options really come into play.
Gears + boost will be the real unbeatable setup.

Any particular gear setup that would be ideal?
Running 31-33” tires (your best guess)?

    AT’s have 3.91 (f’ing lame)

    MT’s have 4.31 (ideal?)

    I’ll just take the gears.

After the new flash manager is released, how do we go about requesting these new items such as Gear Lock and boost?

I’ve got 4.30s with 285/75R16 (33s) and my truck runs fine. Goes into 6th and all that. Afraid 4.88s might be a bit too high for what I’m running. Maybe one day. I still get 19 on the highway. I’ve seen 16-21 depending on wind but I’m always in that range unless I’m Offroad.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet that 5th gear will be the sweet spot for gear lock in an AT Tacoma for most highway conditions. 6th gear is just too tall and this engine makes no torque. Anything under 2000 RPMs feels like its stuck in the mud.

You convince me every time. ;)

4.3’s would be awesome with 265/70/17’s. Sooner or later it’s going to happen

Gear lock will probably be released with the new FM. Boost refers to turbos that Mat is developing for these engines. It is completely separate from the tune and will cost a pretty significant amount of money—at least in my world
There is an OVtune Tacoma Turbo thread that is completely separate from this one.

Anyone who doesn’t think $6k is a good chunk of change is sick in the head.

Confirmed..Disconnecting battery does not reset learned values.
    Gotta use Techstream.
    @OVTune,
Mat, do you control the idle RPM via the tune? Did you look into the idle range for AT?
    Thanks

4.30 with MT.. one more reason to love a MT :D

I'll be moving up to 255/85R16 later this year and am excited to see how they pair with the stock 4.30 gears plus the new tweaks with the tune. I MIGHT get a set of 34" tires but doubt it. Don't really want to spend the extra coin for wheels.

I know plenty of people that have $6k wrapped up in pocket lint in their favorite pants.

Speaking of boost, there is a Turbo charger made by Milwaukee ! It’s on a 2nd Gen but looks like major competition for @OVTune. (Sarcasm level HIGH). Some of you might have already seen this but I found it lastnight at work. It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time.

Sounds like gear lock will just be a toggled option when applying a base tune to your truck with Flash Manager.

I hemmed and hawed about gearing. I have the same tire size as you and went with 4.88’s I’m so happy I did instead of 4.56 or anything higher or lower depending of your perspective. It’s drives like the truck should’ve from the factory and I’ve forgotten I’ve even done the upgrade. With a non corrected speedo the difference between the stock tire size and stock gearing at 75mph compared to 4.88’s and 33’s is 350 rpms. 1850 stock and 2200 modded. I drive a ton on the highway at 75+ and wouldn’t recommend anything less than 4.88’s. When this tune finally arrives it should make for a perfect truck.
