About $2,500. I went with East Coast Gear Supplies pre built front and rea differentials to ensure it was done correctly. Had a local shop swap them out which still cost about a grand. So $1400 after receiving an additional $1100 back on a core charge then $1050 to instal. Sooooo worth it over any other mod including a tune. If you can do them both then perfect.

Totally agree here. 4.88's make the truck drive as it should have about 90%. It doesn't fix the lazy throttle of the factory tune, but ECT fixes that. Hopefully OVTune will have tunes specific for folks with gears soon.

Yes go ahead, you can update on FM release if you'd like to.

Someone just messaged us this morning saying they installed 5.29s and their truck hits the speed governor @80MPH. Wonder if this is what others are experiencing? This means it throws things way off.

Just recieved my initial batch of tunes. Looking forward to running them.

So quick question. 85 is the base level gas here. Any issues running it on the 87 tune or are the tunes just labeled for what is common near you @OVTune

Do not run a lower octane on a higher octane tune. You can run higher octane on a lower octane tune (ie 89 on the 87 tune).

I’d say they’d be too high. Probably over 2600 rpms at 75. First would be so short and jerky.

Cannot emphasize this more......do NOT run lower octane than what the tune calls for. So 87 octane means minimum of 87 octane, etc.

Nope. Why guess the math isn’t hard?

My worksheet says an AT @ 75 with 5.29 and “33’s” should be at 2364rpm. @80 2522 and not cresting 2600 till close to 85.

I’ve posted my worksheet in the 5.29 mega thread.

The real question is at what rpm/throttle position does the truck go into full Otto. Will 1.05 allow Atkinson at ~2500 rpm cruising down the highway.

And I was literally thinking about doing gears until I saw that. I’d like to see what mat says about how gears mess with the truck first

Ok...? So do I, but $6k is a lot of money when one considers that is a years wage for some people and could literally feed an entire village

    1. My MPG remained mostly the same, or perhaps +1mpg in some situations, at best. Of course, this will vary all over the place depending on which tune file you use, how you drive, your truck's own nuances, etc.
    2. Most of the obnoxious gear hunting goes away, but not all. I believe Mat is currently working on reducing it even farther with a few minor tweaks.

If we've learned anything about the 3rd gen power train and trans, it's that every single truck has its own quirks and nuances.

That makes no sense to me whatsoever. The truck should still thinks it’s doing only 80 as indicated. Let’s even make believe The GPS incorporates an algorithm. Those gear ratios would still be so far off from tricking the truck into thinking it was doing 80 as aposed to the 105 or so maximum limit
