4 cyl. owners

hey all. been lurking and learning some. time for a question.

do you guys with the 4 cyl tacos regret buying a 4 cyl? i would use mine for trips to home depot/lowes. haul my motorcycle a few miles(5?), and just as an everyday driver. my off-roading days are done for the most part, except maybe a little trail riding while hunting. not a speed demon, but i aint no grandpa either. the MPG estimates are tempting me to go for a 4 banger. 4X4 ofcourse.

any advice/opinions are greatly appreciated as i'll be buying something in the next 2 weeks. looking for '08, '09, '10.
P.S. my other choices are a tundra or a full size ram. i know...kinda all over the map. maybe i drink too much .

I have been in 2WD 4 cylinder Toyotas since 1984. Drove an '84 (manual) until 116,000 .... 3 winters in upstate NY snow. Had a '94 (automatic) - trading it in with 123,00 on it for an '06. Another automatic - trading it in with 22,000 for a 2010 AC SR5.

I use mine as a daily driver .... trips to Lowe's on the weekend, 1 1/2 yards of mulch, etc.

The '06 with an automatic got me more than 30 mpg on highway. It is actually rated better than a manual. I would lock in the cruise at 60, (keep your comments to yourselves .... ha) keeping it under 2000 rpms.

The 4 cylinder is quick from the stop if you have that need.

I have never had any regrets ...... others may say differently.

Look around, ask questions .... you'll be happy with what you choose.

 

i have had my 08 taco 2wd (no prerunner) auto tranny for a little over 2 years and honestly i have nothing to complain about.....ok one thing the effin bench seat haha. other than that the mpg is great, has great power for a 4 banger even up step grades. but i cant offer much info about the 4x4 but i would assume its about the same.

go test drive the 3 truck you are looking at and decide exactly what you want im sure itll end up a toyota :-D

 

no regrets here, every day i am amazed at what i can get this little truck to do. I plan on a few mods to maybe get a few extra ponies, but i really don't need them, i just cant leave anything stock

 

not sure what the truck itself weighs, but i was a total weight of 2140 kg when moving (weigh scale stop ), and i got around 25mpg on the highway. not too bad for a auto 4 banger with around 500lbs in the box

that 500lbs is a guesstimate as well.

not sure about eveyone else but im at stock with 255/55-18's which are about 29 or 30" and i honestly dont feel like i have lost any power.

 

with the prerunner 4x4 you have 4.10s on 245/75 16s which are 30.5x9.5 16

the base 5 luggers use 3.73 gearing and imo feel like they are lacking in quite a bit of power

 

No regrets at all. This is my 2nd 2.7, and though I tested the 6 and loved it, every time I pass a gas station I'm glad I went with the 4. Durable as hell, enough power (esp with the manual), love it.

 

I don't want to come across as being a smart-ass but ...... unless I am mistaken ...... the Prerunner is 2WD ..... correct me if I am wrong .....

 

I have a six camry, it flies. The four(automatic) is good all around: MPG,towing,snow (with the limited slip diff) you just can't punch it.I would buy another.

 

your right the prerunner is 2wd as well, but im pretty sure they have the same gearing in the rear like the 4x4's

 

easy maintenance.. great on gas.. no complaints... i love my 4 banger!! im glad i didn't get a v6, but I don't plan to tow anything heavier than a bike and no offroading since mines lowered. depends on what you need it for but in your case a 4cyl would be just fine.

 

I love mine, great mpgs, it pulls hills just fine u just dont plan to run 90 up many steep mountians

 

I like my 4 cyl. It has all the power I need. If you haven't driven one yet, I suggest you do and decide for yourself. It may surprise you how peppy it is.

 

i haul my r1 in mine and i can't even tell it's back there. i have 265 m/ts on it and off road i am amazed at what it can do. through mud and up steep hills in 4lo and the wire mod it does great. as said above it is not a fast or even a quick vehicle but it merges on the highway just fine. ya the 6 would be great but my plan with this truck is to keep it forever as a winter/haul vehicle and once it's paid off in probably 3 years get something to drive when it's nice out. for now i have the r1 to go fast on.

As I re-read I figured that what you had meant ......

 

Sorry for a correction the 2wd tacomas(5 luger) has 3.58 gears according to Toyota.

Best advice to any the 4cyl is solid, its good on fuel and the power is there when you need it.
