So I recently greased my carrier bearing and this is what has happened over maybe 2 weeks.

No more squeak, but when I back off of the gas to let it coast my truck shakes so bad, it makes the hood shake and all the trim, passengers, and cargo along with it.

Could it be a bad mount, bushing, or do I actually need to get a carrier bearing spacer made?

It does it in every range of MPH on the speedometer. Like I said it does it when I let off the gas to let the truck coast. It gets worse and worse while it downshifts.

I know on the jeep forum wheel spacers sometimes cause the death shake, maybe taking those all pro spacers out and driving and see if that gets rid of it.

I wonder why the spacers would cause that... I mean its just happened in the last week and I've had my spacers on for about 2 months.

Its a knocking, rattling shake.. It was so bad it scared the Girlfriend haha

How did you grease the carrier bearing?

Seems, if the shakes occured after you greased it, then....that's where the problem is. Sounds like something is 'out of balance'

Sounds like a drive shaft to me brotha.... Shaking while decelerating. The most common cause is driveshaft issues.

Needs to be rebalanced or replaced. Check and make sure all your driveshaft bolts are good n tight and the carrier bearing assembly is tightened down as well....

I took a grease gun and packed every opening and corners on the carrier bearing assembly.
But it really weird cause it only does it while coasting.. seems to me like the entire drivetrain is loose.
I'll check today or tomorrow and I'll have an update for you. Everything should be tight, Of course I have been going to alot of mud bog's trails and the rocky road leading up to the gate.

So a new Tom Woods? Or can I save this driveshaft?

I was getting a really bad shake when i was slowing down and i found that my rear u-joint on my drive shaft was completely toast, fixed that and the shake went away

I'm having a feeling that either my carrier bearing has alot of play in it from the lift OR my u-joints are gone..

Dang some of my friends are having truck issues as well..

My best friend just spent $450 on a Ignition sensor and now has to go back due to the same occurence. (2002 Chevy Tahoe)
My other friend Just got his u-joints replaced and is now fixing all the fluids leaking out of the engine bay. (1995 2 Door Tahoe)

just crawl under there and grab your drive shaft and see it its got any play in the joints, if it does then you found your problem and its an easy fix.

I just had my fuel pump fail on me AGAIN and it blows i just changed it last summer so i dont know why it quit on me again. i also just bought a new steering rack and new front diff so i've put some good money into it this week.

The carrier bearing isn't a greasable item. If it was .... it would have grease zerks on it. Since you managed to shove grease in there, you might have put too much in and un-evenly causing it to be 'out of balance'. The reason why you only feel it when coasting, is because there's no 'torque' on the driveline .

Why did you grease the carrier bearing in the first place? Perhaps it needs to be replaced.

I have a grease gun I got from Autozone and pumped out maybe a 1/4th of a tube. The bottle was smaller diameter than a average caulk bottle.

Anyways, I just pumped some grease in the bearing. I packed it in there so it fling grease everywhere.
Thats what the shop and I thought too, but because it hasn't done had any problem with the drivetrain until right as school got out (May 21st).

Its now starting to do it from acceleration.. 0-25/30 MPH. I greased it because it would squeak HORRIBLY when backing up and then would chirp driving forwards. When it would get like that I would get the hose and squirt water in the bearing to make it stop, it did until it dried up again.

I've heard that our carrier bearings loose life quickly when we have a lift on our trucks.. It didn't help that I jumped it a few times:eek:

I have a "3" inch AAL from Fabtech
I think I'm about the same pace you are...

What I dont understand if it isn't greasable and is a "closed" bearing, why would it still squeak? And if I put water in the bearing it didnt squeak either...

If it continues, I'm going to buy all new "connections" i.e. everything you said.

The carrier bearing is bad - you need to replace it. Since these don't have grease zerks - you can't possibly put grease in there and assume the grease is going exactly where it needs to go. Besides - putting grease into a bad bearing, is only a bandaid and a waste of money on the cost of the grease.

    Bearings don't last forever.

Spraying water into a bearing is one of the worst things you can do. Closed bearings have grease in them. The grease doesn't last forever and it can break down. Oil/grease & water don't mix. By squirting water into a bearing will only cause the grease to separate from the balls/needles AND water accelerates the onslaught of rust inside the bearing.

If you're gonna spray anything into a bearing .... spray WD40 or some sort of 'light oil' or even penetrating oil. This will NOT fix the bearing but atleast help lubricate and stop the squeeks until you can replace the bearing.

Ultimately...a sealed bearing is going BAD when they start squeeking. You can't do anything about it to repair it. You have to replace it.

It seemed to do its job for the squeaking and chirping bit.. And not alot of grease came out or the bearing after i drove it around town.. The grease was actually left over from our garage door haha.

Water was a good thing at the time, because I absolutely cannot stand it when a vehicle squeaks or rattles, especially my truck.

** I'm not arguing with you, I'm just stating this stuff so that it might be easier one everyone who is participating or looking to comprehend it better.

It probably pooped itself at the last mud bog where this all started haha. I wasn't a participant, I'm not that dumb... haha

    I'm hoping its not...
