I just recently purchased a 2018 Toyota Tacoma after years of driving Jeep Wrangler's. I have run Amsoil on all my Jeeps and do the first oil change at 5k and at every 7.5k after that.
I went to the dealership to get my tires rotated and oil changed and had the service advisor tell me that Toyota wants the oil changed at 10k for first oil change because of extra zinc added to the original synthetic oil from the factory.
Is there any truth in what he is saying?

Idk about the Zinc statement, but oil change intervals on the tacoma is every 10k miles.

My 2015 Wrangler was every 10k as well.

10k is pretty common these days.

Yep, toyota recommendation is every 10k. Many of us here are old fashioned and did a "break in" oil change within the first 1000 miles or so. It's entirely up to you, there's some that will say you're pissing money away but for 25 bucks an oil change it was peace of mind for me.

It’s BS. There’s no special break in oil for these trucks. Plain old Toyota synthetic 0w20, sourced from Mobil. While it’s plenty good up to and even past 10k, it all depends on your driving. But there’s no extra zinc or special unicorn’s blood in it. I personally change it every 5k, but that’s because I’m already under the truck inspecting everything during that interval, and my driving would dictate more of a severe service interval.

Fuel dilution (caused excessive short trips and idling) is now the only remaining reason for a shorter OCI. If that's the case for you, get an oil analysis at 6-7k and adjust your OCI accordingly.

I just make sure i drive around town in 1st and 2nd gear only---does that help increase engine oil temps? :anonymous:

You really should change your oil every Tuesday afternoon for the first 6 months. It's just a few bucks worth of oil, can't hurt.

There's a balance...ideally you want no/low load/engine speed while the engine is cold, then you want to warm it up quickly without putting too much stress on it. Majority of engine wear occurs when the engine is below operating temp.

But at the end of the day, 99.9% of people just get in and drive and their engines are perfectly reliable. Don't overthink it and just get the oil analysis done at 6-7k and adjust your OCI accordingly.

Welcome to TW, the forum where members get bent out of shape about oil threads....

My first thread was about tire size, another hot spot.

You can change the oil every 10k without issue, and 0W20 synthetic is recommended, although many here have different opinions.

Good luck with the new ride.

The 3rd Gen runs synthetic oil with oil change intervals at 10k miles. ALL oil changes are at 10k miles not just the first.

The zinc comment is BS though.
