Tail light mod (both lights used as brake and signals)?

That is prototype from a few months back. Stock incandescent tail / brake with incandescent 921NA bulbs in the reverse position. I have a single Rigid diffused flush mount to the right of the license plate. Working as well as it does, Stage 1 or 2 will be just killer.

Everything has been worked out on the kits. It’s just finishing up soldering and testing each one. I haven’t had much time this week to work on them, so hopefully this weekend I can wrap them up.

@mesojdm can you shed some light on mounting the load resistors? Do you just secure it with zip ties and let it hang? Or drill hole on metal chassis and mount for heat dissipation?

 

You could probably compromise by using some thermal tape rather than drilling holes. Should be more effective anyway as it would accommodate surface irregularities.

 

That's a good idea. Uncertain how hot those resistors get, I think it only need to dissipate heat when the blinker is on?

 

But if the resistor is unplugged, do the lights still function?

 

My uneducated guess would be YES. The resistor is there to add load to the turn signal circuit to prevent hyperflash. The circuit may function just fine without it... or it may hyperflash - the reason for the resistor's existence.

 

Yes they will function, But they may or may not hyperflash. Since everyone’s setup is different...I.E stock bulbs, aftermarket turn signals LEDS, added aftermaket mirror LEDs, etc. The resistor might not be needed, or maybe even a different resistor value. That is why it’s on a 2 pin connector for easy removal/changing/etc.

 

Do screws come with kits for mounting the resistors? If not, do you recommend a certain size?

I do not include screws. I will leave it up to the customer if they want to put holes in their truck. I will however include VHB tape for the back, which will work perfectly fine for securing them.

That AC brake light mount has me thinking.

 

You don't need to worry about mounting the resistors to the chassis for heatsinking -- if the resistance is properly chosen, they'll barely get warm. However, one unused hole in the sheetmetal already exists in the tail light cavity, high up. I used a tiny bolt, nut, and a washer to mount the resistor using that hole.

 

The 10ohm resistor w/ a typical running voltage of 14.3Vdc would yield about 20.5 Watts when powered. If in free air circulating around the brake light wire loom area; no need for additional heat sinking/dissipation.
