so i just got an email from our plant manager saying that starting in Jan all GE sites will be smoke free. up until now we've had designated smoking areas, but now they are saying that smoking on grounds (including the parking lot and inside your car) are prohibited and can lead to disciplinary action. They are saying that they are attempting ot improve employees health. the last few years they have offered incentives for losing weight and being healthier in general. now they are saying they can no longer ignore the link between smoking and poor health. they actually say in the email, "this is 7 months away, which is plenty of time for all GE smokers to quit". wtf!? is that even constitutional? i guess it has to be but it seems fucked up to me. a company should not be able to force someone to stop doing something that is perfectly legal. i dont even smoke, so this doesn't affect me at all but it bothers the hell out of me. whats next? fast food? only salads on site? caffeine is addictive and bad for you so only caffeine free beverages? this really really bothers me.

At Dow Chemical they put the same rule in effect. What ended up happening was the people that smoked would just walk out to the parking lot and take a ride off site to have a smoke. I don't smoke, but it used to bother me when someone was taking a half hour break 3 or 4 times a day to go have a smoke. I don't know the answer, but it seems to me that there is a better way than that to handle it. Maybe a smokers room, with a good ventilation system.

I gotta go with Chris. Start a revolution; crack, meth, X. Get some opiates and start handing them out to colleagues. Show GE you aren't gonna stand for it.

LOL... true. thank god for the dividend.

I've thought many times I should start smoking - seems they get 6 extra breaks a day to go slowly kill themselves and me... driving up my health insurance rates.

Don't get the wrong idea, I'm totally against smoking. Both of my parents, my mother in law and my stepmother in law all had lung cancer. No good will ever come from smoking. BUT, I smoked for 25 years myself. I only quit when my kids were old enough to give me a tough time about it. People are going to smoke, no matter what. Here in Connecticut a pack of smokes costs somewhere around 8 bucks, and people pay it. There is really no good answer, smokers are going to smoke and non smokers are going to complain about it.

You're right in the sense that they can not make you quit or prevent you from smoking in your home or off company property. If you are on their property and they have a policy against smoking on their property then they are well within their right to reprimand you for violating the policy.

At the plant I used to work out before I quit smoking, we just walk out in the parking lot or across the street. Especially on nights.

thats a terrible response. i dont mind that response when discussing smoking in bars, because bars you really dont have to be there, it is completely voluntary. now work is also voluntary (in the sense that i could choose unemployment) but they require us to spend 8 hours a day there, they shouldn't be able to implement something like taht.

i'm actually pretty surprised that nobody has an issue with a corporation stripping away personal rights and decisions. i hate the mentality of "well i dont like it so nobody should be able to do it". we should all be free to make whatever decisions we want, no matter how damaging, as long as its not illegal.

they had a great solution. in the past you could not smoke anywhere (including the parking lot) unless it was a designated smoking spot. these spots were set up in areas where you literally would never even see unless you intentionally wanted to go to the smoking area.

i hate cig smoke too, but as along as the designated areas are isolated i think its wrong to exert that kind of control on people.

well, i dont smoke or drink coffee. so i get no breaks, but i dont complain. if i wanted the breaks i could take up either one of those hobbies. i understand they are not requireing people to quit, bu they actually said "this gives you 7 months to quit". they know that no regular smoker can go 8 hours without some kind of nicotine. this means you either have to quit, or spend the money on gums and patches.

    once again, that argument sucks.

and thats fine, but those complaints have evolved into taking action against a certain group of people, who are breaking no laws.

i understand its their property, but thats not the point. as i said, fast food and coffee are unhealthy too, is that the next step? once one groups rights start to go its easier to take them from other groups.

our campus is massive. its a good quarter mile walk across the parking lot and the field beyond to get to the street. the fact taht our campus is so huge is why the designated spots were so isolated in the past. i have a feeling this is just a way for GE to save money on their insurance.
