Ha! There were more notches in the middle, those however, were sistered with pieces of 3" baseboard trim.....

Like this one. How ever, I still think it should be simpler...no images, just the letters. Not everyone has a lifted, snorkel, custom bumpers, etc. But we all love this forum.

In all seriousness though, it's crazy what some people do. They have since been remedied with lengths of 2x8s.

Honestly older houses were built with many more rooms in the lower levels, allowing the load to be more evenly distributed. Plus they were generally built with bigger cuts of lumber which helped as well. They can survive for a long time that way as long as the cut isn't too huge.

 

I’ve seen a bunch of older 4Runners pop up in the philly area on eBay lately. I wanted to double check but I’m pretty sure PA dumps road salt all over just like MA correct?!

Those joists look like ACTUAL dimension and not NOMINAL like we have today, a much beefier piece of lumber. Plus it is most likely 'old growth' lumber which is stronger as well.

 

I like it, obviously you know the lines need cleaned up but it probably represents the community the best.

They definitely are.
