Well, honestly, the difference in traction with only 120 lbs is probably negligible. Besides, I got off track from the original point I was trying to make: why is everyone so concerned about tire weight? Diameter has a far larger impact on your handling and economy and like Ryan said, the minute you lifted it and put larger tires on it, economy as an argument became almost meaningless.

In the end though, I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just can't see passing up a good tire that performs well, rides good, and looks good because it weighs a little more, but I guess everybody has their own criteria.

 

I was achieving the same mpg with a larger diameter tire that weighed less.I agree to disagree.

 

On that note...

I really enjoyed wheeling an automatic for a change. It was nice not to have to constantly shift gears.

 

How did you enjoy wheeling a suv over a truck

 

Well, the shorter wheel base was kinda nice. I was able to do some things that probably would have required sliders in the OGT on the same size tire. Also, setting up camp was a lot simpler since I just slept in the back seat, which was pretty comfortable since it was cold out. The tent would be nicer if it was warm.

Other than that, I'm sold on the center diff. Sure, it's just something else to break, but AWD mode with traction control was ALMOST as good as having lockers. At the same time, not being able to turn the traction control off in 2WD kinda sucked.

As far as wheeling, it was pretty much the same. I was just more worried about paint and body damage than I am in the OGT. If it was my trail rig, I wouldn't have been worried about it. I have to say though, if I had it to do over again, I would have started with a 3rd Gen T4R. I just think it's a more capable platform.

 

What about the T4R compared to YJ

 

Hard to say. I never really did any technical wheeling with my YJ. I just played in the mud back then. The T4R probably would have broke less, assuming I could fit 16x35 Boggers on it. It's amazing to me that I never broke the Dana 30 front axle on the YJ, but I broke the D35 rear end just about every time.

 

Yeah out of all the jeep axles the 30 is suppose to be the weakest right

 

35 I believe is the weakest. But I mean it's really a toss up between the 30, 35, and the AMC 20

 

AWD, locking center diff, and elocker in the rear for the win.

Granted, that beast had the same size tires I'm running on the Taco, but it also had a 6.0 V8, heated seats, steering wheel, and mirrors...

 

Pretty sure 3rd Gen Tacos have a center diff too.

Wasn't really sure. Seemed like I heard it somewhere, but guess I was misinformed. At least it hasn't come down to the abomination the Ford Explorer has become. Sure, you can shift from 2WD and AWD, but that's all you get. I don't even think the center diff locks and there's for sure no low range. It's an effin' joke compared to the first gen Explorers.

 

It's a soccer mom vehicle.

 

It is now for sure. I hope they don't screw up the new Bronco. They probably will though. The new Ranger is lame as hell.

 

Manual FJ cruisers do

 

Got my eye on this 3rd gen. Limited has the center diff lock and rear locker. At a buy here pay here place so I’m sure it will be there in a few weeks. Plan to get something to drive while I pull the tacoma in the grarage for a huge upgrade.

 

Nice looking 4 runner

 

Got my 4' Firefly antenna today. I still think it's a little long. I put the OGT's 3' one on and it looked just about right. I'll give the four footer a shot first though because I'll get better SWRs out of it, and since it's not mounted on the roof, it can't be any worse than the OGT. Plus with the heavy duty whip spring, the antenna shouldn't flop around a whole lot.

That and I still need to hit that CB shop up on 44 and have them check out my radio to see if it can be fixed or if I need to replace it.
