Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

Thanks. Haven't drilled anything yet. Seeing how things drain currently...which is everywhere. I see why people have done some sealing.

 

So have the leaking issues been fixed by Bak yet? I’m looking into this but don’t want issues with it leaking.

 

No they haven't, but I'm pretty sure they don't claim it to be water tight. I ordered and installed one earlier this month. I first installed it without modifications to see how it well it held out water. The short answer was not very well. I then followed suggested modifications by @tekoma and others in this thread and it doesn't leak now. Thanks everyone that posted on modding this by the way! It was a great help.

 

Do you mind posting exactly which mods you did? I ordered some 1/4x1/8 stripping and RTV sealant. I really want to get mine as dry as possible. Thanks

 

Can do. I actually need to replace some of the foam stripping I added because it didn't adhere properly to the rails. That was my fault because it moved as I was tighten things up and, at the time, I didn't feel like taking things apart again. Over time its started leaking just a little.

Anyways, I'll post the list and pictures some time this weekend when the weather allows me to work on the truck (I don't have a garage).

I bought a used MX4 about 6 months ago with all badging removed. Not sure why that was...

I have taken no extra steps to seal around it for leaks. Very little water gets into the bed, except for the 4 corners.

I noticed when parked on level ground, water is pouring out of the rails on the rear side of the truck, where I circled in red. Killed my idea of sealing the tail gate area from dust and mud that would come in from under the tail gate, because that water would then fill up the bed.






So far I love having this cover, keeps all my tools and stuff dry as long as I don't have them in the corners.

 

My friend also purchased a brand new MX4 for his F-250. That thing leaked everywhere. From all the hinges too. No stopping it. He's going a different route now.

 

Installing mine tomorrow night, it'll be my only chance before we get hit with some rain. Even if you don't have time for photos, a short list of ideas should be more than enough to get me going. I'm plenty capable, just want to try and get it right the first time. Appreciate it!!

 

I took photos on Saturday and I'm in the middle of doing a thorough write up. I'll get it posted before I hit the hay tonight. More soon.

I was watching Youtube reviews today on all BakFlip models. If I decide to put a tonneau cover on my truck I don't think it will be from BAK Industries. Undercover Elite is what I'm thinking about now.

Anyone who thinks you won't ever get a drop of water in with any folding tonneau is kidding themselves. But I've had mine over 2 years now and no issues really. I get a few drops in here and there but stuff stays dry. It has a bunch of dents from hail but nothing through to bare metal. Once and a while the rods will bounce out of the holder but never had one unscrew and it's seen plenty of washboard roads.

 

I installed mine last week. Thank you everyone who posted tips and tricks! My install was straight forward and I ran a bead of black caulk around the perimeter before I installed the rails. Haven’t had rain here yet but I will update if anyone is interested.

 

Truck Hero owns Bak, Undercover, Extang, Truxedo, Retrax, Bedrug and Advantage. I know they bought Bak Industries, so Bak is likely manufactured in its own facility, unless there has been manufacturing consolidation.

I had an Undercover Flex on an F150. The aluminum cross pieces underneath the lid were held in with tiny screws, that loosened, and fell out. Was not impressed with build quality. I have a Bak Revolver on my Tacoma. It has better security than the Undercover Flex trifold, but the rollup design is not the best for freezing conditions.

I agree with others that no cover is completely waterproof. I like the Diamondback covers but they are $$$, and the two panel design has a few limitations, but I think it would probably be pretty waterproof.

Does the sealant make the rails attached pretty much permanently? Or is the RTV sealant pretty easy to get off?
