I have always used one of my local drive shaft builders.

That way if anything is wrong or it needs serviced help is close at hand

Even if you twist it off your original one can always be rebuilt just needs a new tube

I would think that expensive and a long wait. My goal is to get a good one, if necessary, off the shelf, for as little cost as possible and least down time, that is, change the shaft, then deal with the old one.

Choices as I see it are:

Discounted Toyota part - about $1100 or so
    Dorman, around $900 from RockAuto
SKP (or no names) for under $500.
    Salvage yards, $150 and up.

Right now I hope to get by with just a rear u-joint, but as rust-crust as the shaft is, I wonder long the others will last and about balance from crust that flakes off. I'm in NY so you know about rust.

I went this route, my Cardin joint was shot and slip joint to.
This company uses Spicer joints all the way around and is vibration free.
All joints are replaceable, if ever there was a need.
Could not be more happy with it.

Just curious where do you live that costs are so expensive??

Having to wait more then a few days Wow I could wait while one was built from scratchif I really wanted

Used $25.00 to $50.00 for a perfect one.

Rebuild about a hour labor and the new joints
More time to machine off the yokes after one end was twisted off
