I’ll leave it like this. I’m responsible at the end of the day for how I drive. If I run into the back of someone for any reason other than they are reversing or I’m pushed into them from behind, I’m following too closely.

Is this actually legal? I've never cared for smoking out the taillights and pretty much any light in general, but this can't be legal, right?

If you accept that you've decreased your chances of the person behind you seeing your brake lights in time to react, then its all good. I'd rather not take my chances with the number of dumbasses on the road these days. It's your truck, you spent money on it, by all means do what makes you smile. Just don't start a thread down the road with the words "totaled?" in the subject or you won't get any sympathy from us.

Saw a car last night pull from a side street. Traffic was minimal, of course no lights what so ever. Cop car comes rolling up behind them flashing their headlights off & on. The driver of the unlit car didn't seem to notice that either. I don't think they ever blue lighted or stopped the car.

So just let me know what you think about this scenario since you are ripping the OP...

A black vehicle in a 45 mph (I’m guessing at legal speeds) went by my house the other evening with no lights in the rear and no functioning brakelights (only headlights) you are traveling down this same road at 45 mph and they are stopped or very very slow in order to turn. At 45 mph you don’t see them until you are right up on them and clip their rear... It can happen and has happened to people before even while driving in an acceptable manner and speed.

Do you still think the driver of the legal vehicle is a dumbass or just a victim of circumstances? If you can’t see the illumination you can’t see the illumination. In daytime it may be more avoidable, but at night it could be deadly.

Just wanted to see your thoughts. I just don’t see how this dude is getting bashed for pointing this situation out. There is a reason why the dark tails are illegal in many states. It’s not just to write more tickets.

Yeah I get it. It’s stupid. But use depth perception and your brain to see he’s slowing down. If you need brake lights to see someone slowing down in broad daylights, maybe you should put your fuckin phone down and pay attention.

With that logic, why the hell do we need brake lights at all? Your method and thinking seems solid.

A common misconception is that there are varying degrees of legality. Legality is very black and white .. the discrepancy you are referring to is enforcement. Speeding is illegal at even 1mph over the limit but typically not enforced.

Your tires sticking out, although unenforced in your area I’m sure, is illegal because it effects other people. This goes for tampering with headlights and tailights, exhaust too loud, music to loud etc...

Some realize that the axis of the earth isn’t driven through their colon others don’t but what people choose to do with their free will doesn’t dictate what constitutes a law.

See that all too often here in the valley. Putting anything over a light source, will reduce visibility. Whether if it's clear plastic or dark plastic. You are preventing the tail/head lights from doing what it's supposed to and preventing others from knowing what you're doing.

I will never understand why people black out tail/head lights.
